What is the Qur’an?
http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/quran/
The Qur’an is a Message from Allah to humanity. It was transmitted to us in a chain starting from the Almighty Himself (swt) to the angel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad (saw). This message was given to the Prophet (saw) in pieces over a period spanning approximately 23 years (610 CE to 622 CE). The Prophet (saw) was 40 years old when the Qur’an began to be revealed to him, and he was 63 when the revelation was completed. The language of the original message was Arabic, but it has been translated into many other languages.
The Qur’an is one leg of two which form the basis of Islam. The second leg is the Sunnah of the Prophet (saw). What makes the Qur’an different from the Sunnah is primarily its form. Unlike the Sunnah, the Qur’an is quite literally the Word of Allah, whereas the Sunnah was inspired by Allah but the wording and actions are the Prophet’s. The Qur’an has not been expressed using any human’s words. Its wording is letter for letter fixed by no one but Allah.
Prophet Muhammad (saw) was the final Messenger of Allah to humanity, and therefore the Qur’an is the last Message which Allah has sent to us. Its predecessors such as the Torah, Psalms, and Gospels have all been superceded. It is an obligation - and blessing - for all who hear of the Qur’an and Islam to investigate it and evaluate it for themselves. Allah has guaranteed that He will protect the Qur’an from human tampering, and today’s readers can find exact copies of it all over the world. The Qur’an of today is the same as the Qur’an revealed to Muhammad (saw).

Maududi’s Introduction

http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/quran/maududi/mau1.html

Name
This Surah is named AL-FATIHAH because of its subject-matter. Fatihah is that which opens a subject or a book or any other thing. In other words, Al-Fatihah is a sort of preface.

Period of Revelation
It is one of the very earliest Revelations to the Holy Prophet. As a matter of fact, we learn from authentic Traditions that it was the first complete Surah which was revealed to Muhammed (Allah’s peace be upon him). Before this, only a few miscellaneous verses were revealed which form parts of `ALAQ, MUZ-ZAMMIL, MUD-DATH-THIR, etc.

Theme
This Surah is in fact a prayer which Allah has taught to all those who want to make a study of His book. It has been placed at the very beginning of the book to teach this lesson to the reader: if you sincerely want to benefit from the Quran, you should offer this prayer to the Lord of the Universe.
This preface is meant to create a strong desire in the heart of the reader to seek guidance from the Lord of the Universe, Who alone can grant it. Thus AL-FATIHAH indirectly teaches that the best thing for a man is to pray for guidance to the straight path, to study the Quran with the mental attitude of a seeker- after-truth and to recognize the fact that the Lord of the Universe is the source of all knowledge. He should, therefore, begin the study of the Quran with a prayer to him for guidance.
From this theme, it becomes clear that the real relation between AL-FATIHAH and the Quran is not that of an introduction to a book but that of a prayer and its answer. AL-FATIHAH is the prayer from the servant and the Quran is the answer from the Master to his prayer. The servant prays to Allah to show him guidance and the Master places the whole of the Quran before him in answer to his prayer, as if to say, “This is the Guidance you begged from Me.”

I would like to add the following hadith which directly relates to Surah Al-Fatiha

Muslim reports from Abu Hurayrah (RA) who said that the Messenger of Allaah (SAW) said,Allaah, the Glorious and Exalted said, “I have divided the prayer between Myself and my servant equally and My servant shall be granted what he asked for.” Therefore when the servant says,

‘all praises and thanks are due to Allaah, the Lord of the universe’,

*Allaah says, ‘My servant has praised Me.’ *

When he says, ** ‘the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful,’ **

*Allaah says, ‘My servant has extolled Me.’ *

When he says, ** ‘Master of the Day of Judgement,’ **

*Allaah says, ‘My servant has glorified Me.’ *

When he says, ** ‘You Alone we worship and Your aid Alone do we seek,’ **

*Allaah says, ‘this is between Me and My servant and My servant shall have what he requested.’ *

When he says, ** ‘guide us to the Straight Path, the Path of those whom You have favoured, not of those who have incurred [Your] wrath, neither of those who have gone astray,’ **

*Allaah says, ‘this is for My servant and My servant shall have what he asked for.’ *

:jazak: Excellenet job irem. May Allah reward you amply. Thank you for the beautiful Hadith , ibn Sidique.

So many amazing things in these verses.

I think one of the reasons they are so comforting is because we are reassured of Allah's Merciful and Beneficent nature, even as there are references to the Day of Judgement.

And He is our "Cherisher" and "Sustainer." Someone who aids us and shows us the right path. What an amazing relationship of trust and communication is being established in these few lines.

Thank you, Irem and Brother Ibn Sadique.

Beautiful meanings there, just beautiful. i hope we all - myself especially, who needs it - benefit from the meaning and implement it in practice.

The following is merely my opinion of some of the meaning to me of some of the verses, it doesnt mean it is correct, so please keep that in mind. Thanks.

I think it starts off the first ayah to remind us that whatever we do should start with Allah's name, in order that we have good intentions and do actions that will benefit us and not harm us. God-consciousness if you will. Because almost everything we do starts with an idea, so if we have the idea in our minds that whatever we do is being looked upon by Allah, we will want to do the right things.

In the second Ayah, to me, Allah is giving us some of His attributes. He is letting us know that He cherishes His creation, which is the world and all that is in it, and it is also Him that sustains it. To me atleast, this shows Allah's love for mankind and the trees and rivers, and everything else in it. It also tells me that the earth was not made as some play thing, some fancy, etc. It is not something Allah made to neglect. Allah then tells us that He has made it and He will sustain it, for as long as He wills. To me its a reminder that no matter what we do, the ultimate fate of this world lies with Allah. So whatever happens in it, or on it, we have to take with stride and patience. It sort of has a split meaning to me, because I note that man sometimes thinks he is the one that controls things, or sometimes feels if he takes charge of things, everything will be alright. But to me, Allah is telling us that it is not upto man, man does not send the rains, make the vegetation grow, feed all the animals, etc. Allah does that. Also, Allah cherishes this earth, and we should too. By treating people well on it, the trees, the animals, the birds, etc.

Allah then tells us of His Kindness, His Graciousness. I think we only need to look at our lives to realize this. He gives us the ability to use our five senses, to feel love, to raise children, etc. We can feel joy, we can feel sadness, and its a blessing. Then Allah tells us of His Mercy. I think this is something many of us forget. Allah is the Most Merciful. Think of our mothers or those that raised us, and think of how merciful our mothers are towards us. We can do so many wrongs and our mothers still protect us and take our side and forgive us. Then consider Allah's Mercy, which is incomparable to even our mothers mercy. It is far far greater than we can imagine. Therefore we should never lose hope of it. Hope that Allah will bless us with His Mercy. And I also believe that the reason we are capable of making mistakes is because Allah wants us to acknowlege that He is there to forgive them. As is often stated, if we didnt make mistakes, we'd be angels, but Allah did not intend that for us.

To me, when Allah reminds me that He is the Master of the Day of Judgement, it is to reinforce the fact of why I am here on this earth. And it is a reminder that Allah is the Master, the decider, the One who will judge me. Not my neighbor or my friend or my foe. Allah Alone. To me the Day of Judgement is mentioned at the beginning so that I may make my actions with the knowledge that some day I will be answerable for them, and that should be a reminder to me daily, to do good and treat people and everything on this earth well.

The Ayah on worship tells me that I should worship Allah alone, nobody or nothing else. I shouldnt worship money, my boss, my job, my parents, my friends, television, whatever. I am here to worship Allah. When I have this in mind, everything else should fall into place. Limits can be set on how much I allow other things to influence my behavior. And whenever we seek aid, we should seek it from Allah first and foremost, as He is the One that assists us in all that we do, even when we feel that nobody else can understand us, we should always know that Allah can, and Allah can put it in peoples hearts to assist us if we would like that.

The Ayah on showing us the straight way to me says that only Allah can guide us. He knows the way, and we should ask for His guidance in it. Just as we ask our teachers to direct us through different subjects so tha we may understand and be led to full comprehension of it, we should ask Allah for all guidance in our lives. The examples of those who have gone astray tell me that there isnt just one path that people can fall onto. There are paths that dont lead to goodness. I see it as a constant reminder, and to me it also says that it is something we always have to remind ourselves of, because it can be easy to go astray if we allow ourselves to. We shouldnt think that we cant be led astray.

The important thing I learn from this Ayah is awareness of the fact that we must keep Allah in mind in whatever it is that we do, and insha'Allah this will lead us to a good life here, and in the Hereafter.

I realize what I said was rather simplistic and probably are the thoughts of many here, but I merely stated my thoughts on the matter. Whether they are correct or not, that is some of how I feel about this beautiful Surah.

Why is this sura recited when someone passes away? or when we visit the grave yard? Is there any hadith that explains the reasoning behind it?

:jazak:

Irem very good. Thanks so much for sharing.

When you think/imagine that these words of Allah(swt) were transmitted by Gibreel (Alaih-e-salaam) to Mohammed (SAW) it simply brings tears to your eyes. Allah O Akbar

JazakAllah Khairan.

:bism:
:insha: this will be a lifetime experience for us all.
:Pagri:
congratulations Irem.
excellent inaugural posts!

as is usually stated about surah fatiha, it is half praise of Allah and half a supplication (duaa)....
perhaps the model for all duaas (prayers) that we start by praising The Lord and glorifying Him and then ask Him for whatever it is that we wish to ask....

the surah has seven verses....
there is doubt wether "bismillah" is a part of the surah (i.e. one verse of the severn) or not....
some consider it a part....
while others dont and they split the last verse in two to complete the seven....
and Allah knows best what is right....

alhamdulillah....
praise be to Allah....
showing that only He alone is worthy of praise....
and praise is what He deserves....
only goodness is associated with Him and no bad attribute to be put to Him....

rab-el-aalameen....
and why does He deserve all praise????
because He is the Sustainer of the worlds....
He is the One who created the worlds....
and all that the worlds hold....
not just the world that we live in....
but all worlds that exist....
of what we have knowledge of and we dont know about....
He created them all....
and He alone sustains them all....
He set right the balance for the universe that it may exist....
He put up the balance on the earth so it keeps its conditions fir for life....
He made the water needed for life and put the right amount of oxygen in the air for us to breathe....
He sustains the largest of the creatures and the smallest of them....
and no one besides Him is capable of doing so....
He is The Lord of the universe....

al-rahman al-raheem....
and being The Lord, does He exercise injustice and harshness....
no, He is the Most Gracious, Most Merciful....
He does not subject His creations to cruelty and injustice....
He rules of the worlds as Al-Rahman and Al-Raheem....
giving all His creations the necessities for their lives....

maliki yom-al-deen....
He is not just the Lord of the worlds that exist....
but also the Master of the Day of Judgement....
He is our Master both when in this life and in the Hereafter....

iyyaka na'budu....
You do we worship....
and we dont worship others beside Allah....
we have to remember that only He is worthy of worship....

wa iyyaka nasta'een....
and You do we ask for help....
no separation to be made between worship and seeking for help....
we must know that Allah only is worthy of worship and He alone shud we ask for help....
cuz others that we ask beside Him r not able to help us in any way....

ihdina al-siraat-almustaqeem....
guide us to the straight path....
from here starts the prayer (duaa) part....
and perhpas the most important of all prayers....
asking Allah to guide us to the right path....
and the right path is the straight path....
we have to always ask Allah to guide us and tell us what the staright path is....
for this purpose He has sent down books and appointed messengers....
and if we r still in doubt we ask Him and He will guide us....

siraat-alazeena an'amta alayhim....
the way of those whom You have blessed....
which is the path of Islam....
of the truth....
the way that has been preached by all the prophets....

ghayr almaghdhoobi alayhim wa la-al-dhaaleen....
and not those who faced Your wrath and nor those who went astray....
some people think that these groups are the jews and the christians....
but such generalization is not right....
such groups and the group mentioned earlier (those who have been blessed) are present in all nations....
so one has to pray not to be among those who go astray or go away from the right path such that they face the wrath of Allah....

Irem may Allah bless you for starting this thread, may Allah give us the courage and ability to go through the whole Quran in this halaqa. Ibn Sadique, thank you for posting such an important hadith. Since the day I have read this hadith-e-qudsi, it has changed the very mechanical order by which I use to recite al-Fatiha, now I tend to stop after each Ayah.

I thought I will just add few points, which I find important, and with some references from Quran which gives us even better understanding of what we recite every day.

In the very first ayah, the word Rub is used, a very simple meaning of this word is the one who provides care, this ayah from Surah Al-Isra (Chapter 17, Ayah 24) gives a very beautiful meaning for the word Rub.

** æÞá ÑÈ ÇÑÍãåãÇ ßãÇ ÑÈíÇäí ÕÛíÑÇ **

Wa qul rabi irham-huma kama rabbayani saghera
17:24*And say O’Lord have mercy on both of them as they did care for me when I was little.*

In the other ayah the word Al-Deen, has been translated as judgment. In most of places in Quran the word Deen is used for religion. But in this particular ayah it is translated as Yawm alddeen day of judgment. The day when all books would be balanced. Many scholars agree that its known as the day of judgment because the same word in Arabic is pronounced as Dain which means loan for a certain time. When I read this mean, the concept of the Day of Judgment became even clearer. I think of it, as my life is a loan from Allah, for which I will be answerable on that day. So on that day all transactions that we do in this lifetime would be brought forward, and we will be questioned for it. There would be consequence for what we did and consequences for what we didn’t do.

In Aya 6 of Al-Fatiha, we ask Allah to Ihdina alssirata almustaqeem “Show us the straight way”. The word * Ihdina* means to show us, guide us the right path. So Allah subhan wa ta’lla, did answer our prayer, he did show us the straight path. If we read the first four Ayas of Surat Yasin its becomes clear where we have to look for the straight path.

Åäß áãä ÇáãÑÓáíä
Úáì ÕÑÇØ ãÓÊÞíã

Innaka lamina almursaleen
AAala siratin mustaqeem
36:3 Surly you (Muhammad SAW) are among the messengers,
36:4 On a straight path.

So to be on the straight path all we have to do is to follow the messenger of Allah. Another ayah which explains Sirat almustaqeem is in Chapter 3 ayah 51.

*Åä Çááå ÑÈí æÑÈßã ÝÇÚÈÏæå åÐÇ ÕÑÇØ ãÓÊÞíã *

Inna Allaha rabbee warabbukum fa AAbudoohu haza siratun mustaqeem
3:51*Lo! Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is the straight path.*

So the worship of Allah alone is the straight path. The word use for straight is Mustaqeem, the root word for Mustaqeem is Istiqama, it also means to steadfast, to hold ground, all these are driven from the word Qaeem, which means to establish. The ayah would also mean to hold on to the path. I think to follow a straight path we should not have any doubts in Allah’s religion, because if there are any doubts in our hearts then it will hard to standout on that path.

And the last point, the path of those on whom you have bestowed thy Grace(favours). There is this ayah in Surat al Nissah, which indicates those upon whom allah has its grace,

*æãä íØÚ Çááå æÇáÑÓæá ÝÃæáÆß ãÚ ÇáÐíä ÃäÚã Çááå Úáíåã ãä ÇáäÈííä æÇáÕÏíÞíä æÇáÔåÏÇÁ æÇáÕÇáÍíä æÍÓä ÃæáÆß ÑÝíÞÇ *

Waman yutiAAi Allaha waalrrasoola faolaika maAAa allazeena anAAama Allahu AAalayhim mina alnnabiyyeena waalssiddeeqeena waalshshuhadai waalssaliheena wahasuna olaika rafeeqa
4:69*All who obey Allah and the apostle are in the company of those on whom is the Grace of Allah,- of the prophets, the sincere (lovers of Truth), the martyrs, and the righteous: Ah! what a beautiful fellowship!*

So its shows the four categories of people upon which Allah has bestowed its grace, so all we have to do is to follow the messenger, and we will be among those who are under the grace of Allah.

May Allah give us the courage to the follow his path. Please these are just my understanding of these ayats, and its only Allah who knows the best.

:jazak: Irem…

001.001 In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
001.002 Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds;
001.003 Most Gracious, Most Merciful;
001.004 Master of the Day of Judgment.

001.006 Show us the straight way,
001.007 The way of those on whom Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace, those whose (portion) is not wrath, and who go not astray.

During the time that I was following the Sufi school of thought, I believed that the blue verse was meant for those like the Khawajas, Auliyas and pohnchay huay log…

When I used to argue with Deobandis and Wahabbis, the argument I used to bring up was, when a person does good for his employer, what does he get…Obviously more money and a promotion, so what if a person does good for Allah :swt:? I used to say that the person got the ability to perform Karamaat and a ‘pohncha hua rutba’…So my belief was that when Surah Fatiha said “The way of those on whom Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace”, it referred to the way of the Sufis and the ‘Grace’ referred to the ability to perform miracles…Obviously not everyone obtains it…

However that was all ignorant belief stemming from little or no knowledge about Islam…

In reality, this verse refers not to those who practice mysticism or ‘tassawwuf’ or ‘tajjaliyaat’, all deviant practices, but instead it refers to each and every Muslim, and the Grace refers to what the Quran says is the greatest gift that one can receive from Allah :swt:…‘Hikma’ or wisdom…The wisdom to do right, the courage to act upon it and have the patience to bear all trials and tribulations that may follow…

:jazak: again for sharing Irem, may Allah :swt: reward you and grant all Muslimeen to act upon it, Ameen Summa Ameen…

Excellent start Irem - Jazakallah! May Allah (swt) help you continue your efforts! Ameen!

Munni - wonderful thoughts!!! Thanks for sharing :)

Jaza kallah khair to all for your comments, its a wonderful thread and will help to make me more focussed when reciting Surah Al fatiha, inshallah.

  22. As-Sab’a al-Mathaani - The Seven Oft-Repeating Verses

And We have bestowed upon thee the seven Oft-repeated (Verses) and the Grand Qur'an. (Al-Hijr: 87)

In Surah Fatiha Allah (swt) has taught us that after giving praise that is due to Him and confirming that He is the One that ‘ Alone we worship and Your aid Alone do we seek’, we should ask him to ** ‘guide us to the Straight Path, the Path of those whom You have favoured, not of those who have incurred [Your] wrath, neither of those who have gone astray’.**

Allah (swt) has answered this request in the opening ayahs of the following Surah Al Baqara and the whole of Quran is what we should believe in and how to lead our lives to be from the ones that Allah (swt) has favoured.

A.L.M.
This is the Book; in it is guidance sure, without doubt , to those who fear Allah;
Who believe in the Unseen, are steadfast in prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them;
And who believe in the Revelation sent to thee, and sent before thy time, and (in their hearts) have the assurance of the Hereafter.
They are on (true) guidance, from their Lord, and it is these who will prosper.

As to those who reject Faith, it is the same to them whether thou warn them or do not warn them; they will not believe.
Allah hath set a seal on their hearts and on their hearing, and on their eyes is a veil; great is the penalty they (incur).
Of the people there are some who say: "We believe in Allah and the Last Day;" but they do not (really) believe.
Fain would they deceive Allah and those who believe, but they only deceive themselves, and realise (it) not!
In their hearts is a disease; and Allah has increased their disease: And grievous is the penalty they (incur), because they are false (to themselves).

Al-Baqara (2:1-10)
