i hope this is the right forum for this thread. feel free to move it any where if u think this is not the appropriate forum.
there is a quota system in almost all the gov’t or educational institutions etc in almost all the countries. the idea is that this is the best way to represent minority in a certain field or institution, to eliminate racism, give equal apportunity to every one regardless of race, colour religion or gender. there is always certain criteria set for these quota. usually the standards are lowered in order to recruit certain minorities.
others argue that this might be discrimination in it self, as it will give preference to someone who is less qualified than the other person but still gets that position on the basis of the quota.
for eg: two students apply to a medical school, person A is from a visible minority and has less marks than person B who belongs to a dominant ethnic race. person A gets in the school because he fulfils the require of the quota but person B’s application is declined.
what are ur views on the quota system? is it a good thing or a bad thing? do u think it eliminates discimination ?
hmm i dont think it eliminates discrimination, but maybe gives the minority an excuse to seek education.. like it gives them a boost... i dont think its fair that person A gets declined.. but such is life..
its like applying for engineering.. there is a special quota for the amount of females.. and it doesnt matter if the females are a few marks short, they still get in.. same thing happens when females apply at top firms
To be honest if the qouta system is fairly balanced I beleives its really necessory, specially in developing countries where one part of the country is moderanized & others wonder when they even see a cell with video camera.
For e.g. u have one university in a country which opens 100 seats every year, one part of the country is a city with a better education system while the other is a village where hardly ppl study. If there is no qouta system, few ppl who pass the high school in village will still never be able to into university bcos surely there education system was not strong. After 15-20 years u will that part of the country will even go 50 years back bcos they wont generate a single graduate.
On the other hand, if from those 100, 15 seats were reserved for them, they will produce few enigineers, few doc which will help them to slowly slowly move forward.
