Quitting a job

What is the best way to break the news? A written letter of resignation with a sufficient notice period is all well and good, but should you talk to your boss and give him the heads up before that?

Right now I want to quit my current job, mainly because I feel I’ve pretty much reached the glass ceiling and I don’t see any opportunities to further my career beyond this. Secondly I’d like to start working full time doing my own thing. Should I mention these facts on my letter? The thing is I know that if I leave now, there would be a significant disruption to this company’s operations, they will probably need time looking for a replacement and will probably try to hold on to me.

Sending an email is usually enough to let them know, then you can talk. And don't give reasons as they may try to convince you to stay.

Would they give you a long enough notice before laying you off? If the answer is yes, then do so, otherwise no.

You don't need to tell them anything other than that you are pursuing other opportunities, and that it was great working for them and you wish them continued success.

Hmm.. just saw your location is Lahore, so I don't know how things work there, although I have been told that job jumping in Pakistan is seen as a big negative.

Re: Quitting a job

as far as i know resignation is always via letters (well preferred this way). so that you both have proof of your resignation.

well u can speak to him first and let him know that u wish to resign if s/he is all nice...or just simply write your resign letter and hand it in....it will be a good idea if in your letter you state, on exactly what date you wish to leave so that they have enough time to find someone in your place....or when u speak to him.

its always a good idea that u give a notice of like 1month so that they can make their arrangements......takay tumhare jane ka baad yeh na kahain ke ek dum se chala gaya aur yahan museebat hogayi. :p

Re: Quitting a job

Ideally you should have the letter ready in your hand, and have the discussion with your boss before handing over your resignation letter.

Get straight to the point, and be honest with your reasons of wanting to leave, and your notice period should be whatever is stated in your contract, thank them for the opportunitys they have given and ask them who you should hand over to.

Who will replace you is not your problem any more, once you've gone forward don't look back.

Re: Quitting a job

when you quit make sure you have enough savings or your next job lined up....
resign with a written letter keep a photocopy
and work your leaving period wether it is a week or month...

^ this is good for your portfolio and cv in the long run

good luck in all you do..

Re: Quitting a job

Rizla, there are two ways of doing such things : courteous way and a very formal way .

Depending on your relationship with your employer , I would advise you go the courteous way. What it means is , you confide in your manager and let him know of your intention to resign ... and offer your help in any way to find the replacement and handover .
Then write up a letter of resignation and keep a copy yourself while send one to your manager.

There is no harm to share the reasons of why you are looking to move. In my opinion and experience , managers whome you have had a good relationship with , always try to help you out in every way possible , if they offer to keep you in the role , take it as an honour but refuse humbly and politely , believe me they will understand.
When you leave an employer in a courteous manner , you create a win win situation for yourself and the employer .. things like , you leave a positive impression , you tell them you care about the organization by helping them out with handover while they will show their care towards you giving you a glowing referene and perhaps rehiring you years from today ..

Good luck and hope all goes well.
