Re: Quick History Quiz
Okay I think you all did superbly heres the answers.
1) World War 1 is known as (and is still referd to as) the Great War for what reason?
The answer to this question was indeed (a) It was the biggest War fought up till that time.
It started as an oversized skirmish, basically a representative of a great European ruling Fammily namey Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was shot in the Bosnia by the Serbian sepratist Gavrillo Princip. It was the trigger to a catastrophic war that had been brewing for some years becuase several powers had come to rise and were strenously close to war in 1912 but it had been averted by various treaties however this event made countries pick and choose sides and essentially it was between “old rivals”. On one side you had the likes of Germany, Austrai-Hungary, and Turkey. While on the other Britian, France, Russia, Italy and Japan (Yes Japan!) were all trying to rise with a new World Order… again as in World War 2 America joined much later in the War only after the Germans sunk several US ships forcing America to join the scrum. The theatre of operations included the Western Front and Eastern Front, Flanders and Russia respectively but as well as these there were other struggles from as far North as Denmark, to Africa in the South and even Samoa in the Pacific which was fought by New Zealand and Germany.
Well done to all who got that answer
Many of you got that one…:k:
The reason why it was not as answer (b) named after the “great Soldiers” is obvious few wars are named after the men that fight them… ![]()
Nor was answer (c) valid either becuase no-body at the time would realise just how horrendous it would be… despite the battles raging across the globe the governments foolishly believed the War would be over by Christmas but days, turned to weeks, which, became months and many Christmases passed before the guns were silent.
It was definately not answer (d) for obvious reasons. ![]()
2) World War 1 was widely believed to be the first War in which there was extensive use of Mustard gas and other chemical agents… but who used this terrible weapons first?
The Question clearly asked who was the first to use Chemical Weapons in that War… while many of you were right the French and British and even the Boers in Africa had access to Poison gas few imagined it would be used as this War was supposed to be a “great game” so it seemed and it was only when the desperate Germans used this fearsome weapon at several engagements and the British and French were rather late to catch on. So the answer was indeed (d).
3) World Wars 1 and 2 were not the first time the World went to War…
The answer to the above question is True. Yes it may seem surprising but one can easily argue that some like the Napoleonic Wars and others could be termed World Wars and it is indeed fair to suggest this becuase previous wars were also very vast in scale and took place on many continents.
4) World War 2 was notable for the massive use of Aircraft but which Nation developed the first Jet Plane?
The answer to this is offcourse Nazi Germany while one can argue other nations had worked on a Jet Plane the Germans actually made the first one and the Meschersmit Me262 was a revolutionary aircraft but it came too late in the war to save the Germans. It was peerless in the skies and many ME262’s downed several P51s and Spitfires during the defence of 1944-1945. In fact in dogfights the ME 262 was simply too fast to stop, the only way the allies could stop one was to hit it before takeoff and when landing… but it makes scary implications that it could not be matched. Lucky for Britian that in1941 Hitler had none of these Jet fighters otherwise it would have ruined the Battle of Britian. It was also known as the Swallow by the German Lufftwaffe airforce, beucase of it’s swept back wings. It influenced the Americans to design thier own Jet fighter the F86 Sabre and the Russians with thier MiG 15s.
5) Which of the following is not a World War Two battle?
The odd one out here was offcourse the Somme as many of you knew it was the battle of World War 1. El Alamien was a British and German fight out in the Sahara desert. Kohima took place between the British Empire and Imperial Japan on the Border of India and Burma. The Kursk is the greatest Tank battle ever fought and the German Panzers squared off against the Soviet T34s in one allmighty Tank fight. Personally I would have fancied my chances in any of those battles becuase the Somme although it happened a generation before the others it was far bloodier however alas the Somme was not fought in World War two.
As I said Well done to you all nobody scored Zero!
