Questions That Need Answers

Recently, I’ve had a lot of stuff on my mind, leading to unanswered questions. I’ve been thinking about a lot of different things, and I just want to know the answers - it’s driving me crazy. So, if you could provide me with factual anwers to any of the following questions, please do so. (P.S. No, this is not another one of my lame attempts to be funny - I really want these questions answered, hence I posted it in the General forum. Please try to keep the answers concise and to the point.)

  • Is a zebra a type of horse?

  • Can fish smell?

  • Where do fishes extract their waste from? (I’ve never seen an “opening”)

  • (“Why do we eat when it’s just going to end up in the toilet anyways?” I got the answer to this one, it’s because we absorb the nutrients.) But, how do our tummies know what is nutrients and what is not? Also, if all we absorb is nutrients, then why are some people less healthy than others?

  • What is “concentrate”? (Like on the orange juice cartons, it says “Not from Concentrate” or “100% from Concentrate”. What’s all that about?)

  • Why does Tom Petty look like a complete white boy, when his biological brothers look Indian? (You know, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. His mom is like white and his grandmother is Indian or something, and he’s the only kid in his family that has blonde hair and blue eyes, the rest look Indian. Strange.)

  • What instruments does the band The Postal Service use to make their music? It’s strange, but I love it.

That’s all for the moment.

Re: Questions That Need Answers

Re: Questions That Need Answers

zebra's are not horses, they are simply cows who are fashionable.

Re: Questions That Need Answers

Zebras and horses belong to the same family, yes. My question is...are zebras white with black stripes or black with white stripes?

Re: Questions That Need Answers

FF, there is no such thing as black stripes on Zebras. It's dark brown. You need to visit a zoo soon.

Re: Questions That Need Answers

I may be in chicago over the weekend. Should I take this as an invitation :p

Re: Questions That Need Answers

They're white with black stripes. I know it.

[edit] okay they're white with DARK BROWN stripes. Sorry.

Re: Questions That Need Answers

I think you will fit right in. Make it a permanent move. The male zebras will might like your black stripes.

Re: Questions That Need Answers

Re: Questions That Need Answers

Fish have two nostrils on each side of their head like this (::), where water enters and exits. The olfactory [smell] system is located between the entrance and exit nostrils on each side of its head. There is no connection between the olfactory organs and the throat, as there is in the human.

As u can see I have some spare time and have copied and pasted this from a site that I shut down before noting its link.

Re: Questions That Need Answers

You didnt really think you'd get many serious replies did you? That wont happen here lol! anyway, i think i can answer a couple of them.

fish do indeed have intestines and anuses and they poop. I had fish in a fish tank when I was a gal and we had to clean the tank often. They can smell too, like sharks...they can somehow "smell" blood in the water from miles away. Not too sure of the biology behind it all but I do know that they can smell.

"concentrate" as in fruit juices is when the juice is dehydrated - all or most of the water content is removed from the juice. Its then "re-constituted" (just add water etc) at a later point, either by a consumer or by a juice factory. You can buy concentrated juice in small freezer cans and store it in your freezer for a good long time then when you need it, just add water.

Human metabolism determines how your body processes the foods you eat - turning some into energy, some into fat, some into waste etc. Hormones and the pituitary gland are involved and so are most of the major organs - kidney, liver etc. Since hormone levels and organ functioning differ from person to
person, it makes sense that people who eat the same diet would process it differently.
Tom Petty likely has "recessive" blue-eyed, light haired genes. Recessive genes can give a child of "darker" people very light coloring or children of light parents dark coloring. Lighter eyes are more typically recessive. My hubby and I are both brown hair and eyes but 2 of the boys are blue-eyed with light hair. We both have recessive "light" genes in our family trees. And NO, there isnt a question of paternity here so lets not get all mean people!

Re: Questions That Need Answers

I dont think you need to worry about any mean remarks towards women, considering the champion of dirty comments is banned. I would however love to see a response to this on chowk. Why dont you open up a female id, that daddyof3 is not aware of, and post the same thing there.

Re: Questions That Need Answers

Mamaof3, thanks.

It sure is a big world.

Re: Questions That Need Answers

What I have been dieing to know is.

How do fish mate? What about snakes and turtles?

How do birds mate? I always thought they reproduced asexually but then I thought back to Pakistan and remembered we had plenty of hens but no cockerel, so a woman suggested we get a rooster so that they lay (more) eggs, what's with that? Does the cockerel fertilise the eggs somehow inside the hen to make her lay them or what? I never figured that one out. How do chickens get traits of both parents? Or do they?

When I was in Pakistan my cousin had a rooster for fighting and I'm sure it didn't have any dangly bits but when we slaughtered it, it did have something like internal balls but I don't know if they were or they were something else.

Re: Questions That Need Answers

Yea, and if two Siamese Fighting Fish are put in the same bowl, they'll end up killing eachother. So how do they mate?
