Questions regarding women

Are women obligated to take their husband’s surname after marriage in Islam, or is that a cultural thing? Is there a reference from the Quran regarding this.

On the day of Judgement, will the people be called by their mother’s name of their father’s?

Re: Questions regarding women

Under Islamic law, a woman is independent. She is at liberty to maintain her maiden name after she marries...

Re: Questions regarding women

I heard hte same, reasoning being she will always be her father's daughter but not always her husband's wife right?

Re: Questions regarding women

From the little that I know, a woman must keep her father's first's name as her last name both before and after marriage. Her last name should not be changed after marriage to that of her husband's.

Re: Questions regarding women

So she's not allowed to change it or she just doens't have to ??

Re: Questions regarding women

It is permissible to keep his name if she wants to. (Aap ke Masaail vol.7 pg.29)

Re: Questions regarding women

Who is this aapke masaail by? Could you please state the name of the author, publisher, and the sources quoted?

Re: Questions regarding women

I agree with Sadiyah. Name should not be changed. As Allah said in Quran, call every person by its father's name, even if you adopt any baby. You cant name the baby as your son/daughter. So the same with wife. She has equal rights in Islam.

I came to know that Muslims adopted this thing from christians. But as you read history, especially about Ummhat-ul-Mo'mineen (rz) they were called by their Father's name. Like Zainab Binte Hajash, Maria Qibtiya, Ayisha Siddiqa, Hafsa binte Umer, Saoda binte yumama etc.

Re: Questions regarding women

Yep.

Re: Questions regarding women

You absolutely HAVE TO keep the last name of the father?

Jeez, then centuries of muslims have been doing things WRONG. I wonder what that says about other practices?

Re: Questions regarding women

ok i know that it is permissible to keep your maiden name. but can someone tell me if it is wrong to change it?

Re: Questions regarding women

I don't think its wrong. That's pretty clear. What's not clear is whether its haraam to take your husband's last name. Far be it from me to tickle the ego of any man, but frankly, I hate my last name and I can't wait to get rid of the darn thing.

Re: Questions regarding women

Dunno about practices, but it shows alot about how people have stuck to their deen.

Re: Questions regarding women

Wish there was a way to mix both mother and father name to make another last name. Since the genes are provided by both as we know it.:)

..........Just think abouit it......after you get done amusing.

Re: Questions regarding women

in arab countries, it has always been the father’s name with the woman’s name…
in pakistan and india, the husband’s name comes after the british influence…

how did u gather the “centuries of muslims going wrong” from this???

dont just jump to conclusions without knowing even what the real thing is…

Re: Questions regarding women

You'd have a point if all muslims were arabs.

Re: Questions regarding women

^ and you'd have a point only if all muslims were following the british naming system from centuries....

Re: Questions regarding women

but all are not pakistani or indian.
