Is it hard for a British graduate to get a job in California?
Am I likely to face harrasment at the airport and so on?
What is the likely procedure.
If no, and (not too bad), can anyone here help me find a job in California. It doesnt have to be all that glamorous, or well paid. I just want out, want to live in a hot, sunny place for awhile.
You need to find an employer who can arrange a work visa for you (Unless u are a US Citizen/resident). Also, unless u have some experience in ur field you will find it pretty hard to find a job in US.
Others can explain the procedure for you. I only worked in US on company transfers ... so I have no idea how things work, my employer used to do everything for me.
I'm a recent grad. I want to move out there asap. Once I get an MA, will lack of experience still hinder me?
From what I have seen over the years is that experience is more important to land a job than a phd in a small to medium sized company in the U.S. This is slightly different if you are applying in a very big mutli-national company. You can get away with that too if you get hired in a big company thru a consulting, body shop type smaller firm. Because all the screening is the responsibility of the consulting company in that case.
Degree is important but not as much as it is in the UK or in Pakistan. Employers usually don't make a big fuss about your degree or your GPA if you have a proven record of industry experience coupled with good references.
On the other hand, entry-level jobs are hard to find but they do come around. And they won't hire you if they think that you are over -qualified even if you are willing to take it.
I don't mean to generalize things but this is how I have seen it.
my two cents....
