Re: Questions for indians

so well what exactly is the point/value of studying sanskrit these days? this girl i met in india last year told me that she was an MA in sanskrit... and i was like wow, kewl.. but i thought, what exactly is she gonna do with that.. other than maybe teach? i wish i'd asked her...

btw i heard that there is a village in karnataka where they're trying to revive sanskrit... ppl speak only sanskrit there. it's kewl that they're trying to keep it alive...

Re: Questions for indians

yes it is Mattur, they use Sanskrit in their daily life for communication

Re: Questions for indians

wiki says “city of shimoga” :rotfl: omg… i passed through shimoga on my way to jog falls… there’s like 2 restaurants in the whole place, and surprisingly, a lion sanctuary too. other than that, it’s such a sad place!

getting back to the topic, what is the point of doing an MA in sanskrit or reviving the language unless they’re analyzing ancient texts or doing something useful with it?

Re: Questions for indians

what is the point of 90% of the BA degrees awarded in india? these were designed to produce clerks for the queen's empire, and havent been changed much.

Re: Questions for indians

off topic but Eid Mubarak to all the Indian Muslim guppies and guppans here:rose::slight_smile:

Re: Questions for indians

thats true

but indians population wise not percentage wise are more educated than pakistanis

Re: Questions for indians

Thats the same comment we hear/say in pakistan about education system in pakistan . We (Pakistani) generally assume that education system in India is much more evolved in India than Pakistan.

You appear to suggest that it is not the case !

Although, trend of doing simple BA has decreased dramatically in Pakistan, because it is worthless degree, people opt for more professional /technical education now.

Re: Questions for indians

Inida's literacy rate is higher then pakistan

sri lanka has highest literacy rate in sub continent about 90.7%

Re: Questions for indians

i learnt hindi english and sanskrit in school. i'm from delhi so did not get a chance to learn any regional language. but there are other languages in state schools. as for the script i'm not aware of schools who can teach arabic script. maybe for that script a madarsa would be a right place. in india schools are mainly focussed on modern and scientific learning (which i think is a sad part) and so not much stress is given to scripts and languages. most indians learn their languages not from schools but from home or friends. they study languages in school to pass exams.

Re: Questions for indians

My mom grew up in upper Assam, and my dad in lower Assam.Mom learnt Assamese(official language in upper Assam),Bengali(mother tongue),Hindi,Sanskrit and English.Dad learnt only, Bengali,Sanskrit and English.
in ma previous school, i learnt Bengali and English. Hindi, Bengali and Assamese was optional. in my present school, i am having English and Hindi.itz a "central school". it has English and Hindi only, and its compulsory from 1-8.then you have to have to take up Sanskrit from 6-8.then after that you have to choose from Hindi and sanskrit in 9 and have to continue it with English upto 10. so i very much know roughly 4-5 lingoos.
as for the scripts, well, Hindi,Marathi and Nepali scripts are same. Bengali and Assamese scripts are also same, barring the "Ra" alphabets. Manipuri also used Bengali script, bt there was some controvery and now a major campienge is going on there to make Meiti the standard script, even though most use the Bengali scripts. Gujarati script is similar to Devnagari.Punjabi has its own script.all the South Indian languages have their own scripts too,but they look oodly similar. Mizo,Khasi and Naga use the Roman Script. Arunachali also have itz own scripts i fink. Odissi is similar to Bengali. dont know about the rest.

Re: Questions for indians

Happy Navratri to all the Indian Hindu guppies! :)

Re: Questions for indians

Living in Mumbai, we're offered Marathi along with Hindi and English, sometimes we do have Sanskrit / French; and there are hardly schools where you get to learn Arabic. We have to rely on the local madrassa to learn Arabic and other things related to our faith!

Hindi uses Devnagari script which is taught in almost all states. Regional languages are taught depending on state. In Maharashtra they teach Marathi which again uses Devnagari script.

Muslims have to learn Marathi if they reside in Maharashtra. Many Muslims go to Urdu medium schools or English or Marathi or Hindi.

Telugu and Kannada have same scripts

Tamil is different script so is Malayalam

Konkani has no script usually written in Marathi script (Devnagari) or Kannada

Punjabi - Gurumukhi
