I hope south Indian languages are given just as much importance.
Maybe they should teach the malayalam language and history just as extensively as Hindi and the general Indian History in Kerala but if only malayalam language and history are taught than i guess all the other states would follow in the same way and there will be small countries within India with no connection to each other. They might as well separate into small independent countries of their own....i'm sure there are other countries in this world that would love to see this happen to India. So, I think a country needs a common language and history to keep the country together and see each other as Indians more and not just as Gujaratis, punjabis, Biharis, etc. We can always teach stuff the schools don't teach about our respective subcultures to our children at home on our own.
That is why hindi is taught in southern states as well. Infact in our state we had the option of choosing either kannada, hindi or sanscrit as our first language. My mother tongue is hindi but i took kannada as my first language. Instead of trying for a comman language, just give something called freedom for all to choose whatever language they want to learn. Leave them to learn in whichever medium they want to learn. Unity will be automatically taken care of. Afterall language is something which keeps changing just like others. Each language will influence the other and more commanality gradually rises between those languages.
I guess it's great that the one way that indians can communicate with each other is English since there are 100s of languages in all and then there are also the countless dialects but it's some times nice to speak an indian language that all indians can use and understand when speaking with each other which isn't forced on anybody but just a language to bring all indians together other than english.
In America, with my american accent, some times I feel a bit strange speaking in English with other Indians and wish I could speak in an Indian language so I could feel closer to them just so they don't feel like outsiders around me since after all they are Indians just like me.
ok I'm thinking i'm not making any sense to anybody so anyway i'm done:D
I am from North. My father is big Urdu freak so he made me go to Urdu medium school. I was allowed to take Urdu and Farsi as 2 subjects untill my 10th standard. I also had to study English and Hindi apart from usualy Science, Math and sociology etc. Infect during my 10th I wrote all my papers in Urdu. :D
I studied Arabic and Quran by taking tution after school. Finished Quran at the age of 7 and then my Arabic education stopped there.
During my 12th, my medium of study changed to English although I had Urdu, Hindi and English as 3 different subjects apart from Math, Physics and Chemistry.
Hope this answers your question to some extent.

I have few friends from India and they have studied French & Italian at school. But none of you have mentioned these languages. I guess, students can choose at least one foreign language!

We are just discussing the Indian languages here; as far as foreign languages are concerned, every Indian knows atleast one foreign language, I'll say the average would be 2-3, give or take 2-3. Danka. No Fumar.
India will not break if they allow each state to develop their own language or teach their history. We need in India more federalism, which would be beneficial for the whole country. May be even kashmir could be more peacefull if we allow for lesser central govt. control.
Federalism is like America. Allow each state to make their own laws, and national goverment to make its own laws.
I thought that's how it was in India too.
Here in my schools they gave more importance to American history and a little state history came along with it, literature was both American and European combined.
foreign languages taught were Spanish and French and of course English being the national language was taught from kindergarten all the way to High school and on to college
i learnt English, Hindi and Marathi (the script for Hindi and Marathi is same, i.e. Devnagri) in school, learnt Gujrati at home, my grandma use to read Gujrati newpapers and magazines... then learnt Arabic from one aunty who use to come home to teach us read Quran...
