Questions about engagement :)

Hi. So I will be getting engaged soon Allhamdoulillah! ( still in shock )

I have some questions…my engagement will be in karachi in 2-3 months

Both the families want a ‘small get together for close family only’ however this could end up being around 100 people.

  1. Is the engagement done at someones house - if so whose house?
  2. What do I need to start planning from now?
  3. I really want the party to be elegant but not extravagant how can I achieve this - any ideas?
  4. What do you wear on an engagement?
  5. Do people do Rasms on an engagemnt?
  6. Will £200-£300 be enough for an enegagemnt dress
  7. Get ready from salon or do my own make up? If i go for salon guess ill have to book from now!

ARGHHHHHHH

Thanks Guys

Re: Questions about engagement

First of all, Congrats girl  :biggthumb:

The girl’s side is “culturally” responsible for the engagement preparations or so i think, so you get to decide the avenue.

As for the make-up, well if you are going to have a small gathering and if you are good with make-up, you might as well do it yourself. And for the dress, it really depends what you end up liking but if you would want to restrictively work within this budget, you will just have to hunt for it harder.

p.s your inlaws wl be getting you the dress!!!

Re: Questions about engagement :)

As far as clothes are concerned...I've seen girls wear lehngas and shalwar kaameez...choori pajama.....it's up to you. The clothes are not AS FANCY as actually wedding clothes, but they do have their oomph. The jewely is more simple as well. If you want to get professional make up done...book an appointment early. Or look around....and see if you know any friends and relos who are skilled at doing makeup. Have them do some trials on you...take some photographs...and compare.

Is it even going to take place in anyone's house...or will it be in a small hall? It can depend upon the number of people that will be invited...and that's something that you'll have to figure out and discuss with your fiance and his family as well.

Congratulations...and best wishes. May Allah bless you with tons of happiness, Amin. :)

Re: Questions about engagement

Congratulations on your engagement! :biggthumb: i had my engagement in karachi a few months back.. i don’t live there so i was a little worried but, allahmdulillah, it went pretty good
i’ll tell you how it was on my engagement:

  1. Is the engagement done at someones house - my engagement was at my uncle’s (my dads oldest brother) house, we had catring from Hanif rajpoot done and they did the decorations as well
  2. What do I need to start planning from now? try looking at diffrent pictures of engagements, think of entertainments ideas.. my sisters and cousin did one of those “how they met” dances.
  3. I really want the party to be elegant but not extravagant how can I achieve this - pictures, pictures and pictures! trust your taste in things!
  4. What do you wear on an engagement? i wore a churydaar pajama with a looong shirt
  5. Do people do Rasms on an engagemnt? we didn’t do any rasme.. but it actually depends all on the families..
  6. Will £200-£300 be enough for an enegagemnt dress: i think so, most undesigner dresses in pakistan cost around RS.25000-35000.. I don’t know how much mine was for as it was a gift
  7. Get ready from salon or do my own make up? I got party make-up done from Sabs.. i actually just went there 3-4 days before the engagement and booked it.. I thought sabs did and okay job, i could have done the same make up myself..

if you want to see any photos feel free to msg me, i hope this helped

Re: Questions about engagement :)

Firstly, congrats on your engagement :)

I recently got engaged about a month ago and I was in exactly your position! My fiance and I just wanted a small gathering of just family (we were thinking around 40 people) but in our family "small" is considered 100 people!!

We had the engagement in a party hall in a family friend's condo building. The hall itself looked amazing without us having to do anything to it. We actually didn't have to do anything to it because it looked really nice. I think if you can find a location that looks nice, then you won't have to spend money on making it look extravagant.
As others have said before me, the engagement is typically the responsibility of the girl's side.
For my engagement I wore my aunt's outfit from her mendhi. It was a long dress. I would say that you should wear something that's formal. You don't have to go all out, but it's your engagement so you don't want to blend into the crowd. I also think your budgeted amount should be enough.
For rasams, it really depends on the fams. We did a few rasams such as them bringing me clothes, etc. They also fed me mithai. It was very low-key though.
I was also on the fence about getting my hair/makeup done for that day. I was going to do it myself for the longest time, but decided last minute I wanted it done. I'm REALLY glad I chose to get it done. The day of, everything was so crazy that it was fun just having that time out and getting pampered. Also, I was really stressed out so doing my own hair and makeup was the last thing I wanted to do, so having someone take care of that for me and not having to worry about it turning out badly was really nice. I would recommend doing it. How often do you get the chance to anyways? Might as well make the most of it when you get the opportunity :).

Hope this was helpful!
