question to those in a researchy/academia kind of field

is it a major thing to have a book chapter published in a reasonably recognised publisher’s (springer-verlag) book ?

as in, its not a textbook, but a book of selected papers. so given that the paper’s already published in a workshop, is it a big thing for it to be published in a book?

Hi ravage,

Is the chapter going to be Peer Reviewed? If so, then its definitely a good idea to get it published. The other thing you want to look out for is who the Editor(s) is/are who are compiling the book. Usually the editors are people who are well recognized authorities in their fields. If this is the case, then definitely go for it.

I'm in the process of submitting two book chapters myself - one, which I intend to use in a conference later on as well, and the other is something that has emerged out of my lecture notes over the past two years.

And S-V is a good publisher to go with too.

Hope that helps.

What're you writing on? PM me if you need more info / help.

Umar,

thanks for your reply.

Im very unfamiliar with terms like "peer reviewed".. what exactly does it mean?

On the other hand, it has been selected for publication in a book, I just dont know if that is important enough to announce around the world without feeling like an idiot later :D

(this is an year old paper.. was on distributed constraint optimisation in lossy networks)

Hi ravage...

when you say its been "accepted", that already tells me that there was some sort of peer review that went into the process.

Peer review means that your work or ideas will be subjected to the scrutiny of two or more others who are experts in the field of the subject at hand. Typically referees remain anonymous to you, and you to them - hence, they're not selected from among your close colleagues, relatives or friends - the publisher or the editor selects them.

I serve as a referee for some conferences, and I don't get to see the author's names when I get their articles to read from the publisher/editor/organizers.

The reason this is important is because anyone can write articles and publicize esp. by publishing them online etc., hence people respect peer reviewed articles etc. Also, on your resume', yo ucan then have a section for Peer Reviewed Publications and Other Publications.

Hope that explains it.

Good Luck and Congratulations on the acceptance.

Ciao.

cool.

thanks.
