There is a clear divide in muslims about the impression of alleged terrorrist OBL and his patrons Taliban. At least on this forum Shias are clearly in opposition to OBL and Taliban.
My question is, Is it because of being a follower of different sect or difference of priniciple. Also the wahabi sunni gerenerally are sympathetic due to same philosophy or else.
Salaam bro Analyze,
Iran is a Shia nation and despite having lots of disputes against Taleban, they are the ONLY ISLAMIC COUNTRY rightnow to somehow show some firmness towards USA incase any civilians get killed!!!
In general, Shia defination of Jihad is contrary of what other Muslim groups belief.
According to Shias the main jihad is the one we fight against eveil wishes and desires amaongst ourselves (i.e. Jihad with NAFS). Jihad-e-Asghar, or the other “war-type” Jihad according to Shia teachings could only be fought when Islam is to be DEFENDED ONLY. That too on the condition that no women, children, or elders should be HURT.
Correct me if I am wrong any of the Shia followers out there. I hope i am right.
salaam

Well, I'm not Shia but I would not be surpised if their enmity toward the Taliban arises from the fact that when the Taliban sacked Bamiyan they are said to have killed thousands of Shias. And given that OBL is the Taliban's honoured guest, enmity towards the Taliban would also be directed toward those who they shelter.
yes, I am very sure.
Specially the hardliners have been very clear in their statements that any CIVILIAN dieing as a result of attacks by USA would be UN-ISLAMIC ie UNACCEPTABLE.

And yes, Iran does not like Taleban. But atleast they stood up for the civilians of Afghanistan (who arent all Shias). Which no other Islamic nation could do so far.

Then there are surely more muslim countries than just only Iran. Iraq, Syria, Libanon and CO. What about these countries?

Assalam_alaikum bro. well, i think its mainly due to Shia sect having different defination of Jehad as explained to some extent above by sis Ramesha.
Shia sect & Sunni sect have few contrasting beliefs. One of them being; that in Shia sect, the only interpretion of Quran and Hadith acceptable is the one done by Masumeens, that is either Prophet Mohammad-e-Mustafa (saww) himself or the holy Ahlay Baet (as).
The Jihad that Masumeen (as) have taught us can only be fought when Islam is to be defended. Hazoor-e-Paak never attacked. Even when Mecca was conquered by the Muslims after hazoor was compelled to hijrat, Muslim mujahideens were ordered not to mis-treat or threat any of the kuffars. That too was a Muslim army of no ordinary people. It was full of great people like the companions (ra), and great warriors like Imam Ali.
Hope it makes sense.

that is true jihad, indeed.

Pathan Bhai, that is also the opinion of Jihad held by most Sunni scholars. However, a small minority of them try to justify a more extremem definition of Jihad.

yes Scientist Bhai, I understand that. But brother i have also noticed that many of Sunni beliefs seem to be getting under the influence of Wahabhi school of thought!
What is your opinion on this?

m_s and p b you both are right. You can't change this: Stupid ppl will exist everywhere.

after returning from one of ghazwa, before entring Medina, Prophet PBUH told people that they had come back from "jihad-e-asghar" and headed towards "jihad-e-akbar"... meant that "jihad-e-akbar" is the one against oneself, evil desires, evil deeds etc.
I think all Muslims do hold this beleif. but the contrary is held by 'jihadi' organizations... of course they have to justify their actions too, right? they can pick and claim what they want and we know what is right and what is wrong.
may Allah help us all towards understanding of Islam and help us in acting upon the principles of Islam, aameen.
We oughta be Changez like, don't we?
I wish if these fanatic sunni wahabis could have a better understanding of Jihad. They have ruined and devastated the concept and the whole muslim world. May God show them the right path.Amen.
Analyze it;
Fanatics are neither sunni nor shia. They have their own beliefs.
Its unfair to blame the sunnis for the acts of a few individuals.

I think analyze_this is right in a way because if a person interprets Quran in the light of Hadiths and Seerat-e-Naabi, then s/he would never come up with such warped conclusions.
Wahabhi Scholar teach to make sense of religion with direct understanding from Quran and Quran only. Its not the conventional way. And in my opinion, it is bound to mislead.

I agree with you. Just look at "Taliban". They are called "students" turned warriors.
I ask, what religion have they been studying???
Its definately not Islam which taught us to love and respect others. Only Allah knows where they got their interpretion of Jehad from. It might have came from Mulla Omar or someone. Not from my Allah or Nabbi (saww).
very nice short answers from most of the ppl.
