Okay experts … here comes some noob question (i might annoy you guys a lot). I have recently started my struggle to cook on weekly basis. So far its going okay .. however, there is one thing which is confusing me a lot
I normally buy chicken from Metro (Zabiha Halal) which gives the expiry date on the tray i.e., use before March 24. Now what i am confuse is that are they referring to use-before for the chicken because of the packaging ? or is it the chicken ? I mean .. what if i cook it right away .. and keep in the fridge, I might eat it by the end of this week whciih would be 2-3 days past the expiry date .. is it okay ?
Raw chicken needs to be cooked before the expiry date or otherwise freeze it. If you freeze and then take it out to thaw and cook it the same day, it’s fine to use. Frozen then thawed raw chicken does not last very long - I wouldn’t push it past the second day personally. And actually the better option is to baghar it (with some oil, bit of onions and garlic) the same day you thaw it to allow it to last longer.
If you bought cooked chicken, same principle applies. Eat cooked chicken before the expiration date or freeze and thaw it out, heat it up and eat it soon after - thawed pre-cooked chicken lasts several days - but do the sniff test.
