I have a small question and did not want to start a new thread…
Is the recitation of the 1st kalima (shahada) by both spouses mandatory, for the nikah to be valid?

Re: Question on Nikkah---Split from nikkah for limited time.
Recitation of kalima is not mandatory for the nikkah to be valid, all you need is 2 witnessess.

^ do the witnesses have to be muslim ?
also if nikah is with non-muslim woman in a non-muslim country can non-muslim witness it ?
Re: Question on Nikkah---Split from nikkah for limited time.
I did search on it and no where it said that the witness has to be muslim. As far as my understanding goes, yes a non muslim can be a witness, what I read was that witness should be a male, all the sites i have searched didn't say that the witness has to be a muslim.
Re: Question on Nikkah---Split from nikkah for limited time.
According to the bahishti zewar - all witnesses have to be Muslim, regardless of where in the world you are. Nikah is an Islamic marriage and witnesses form a part of the marriage ceremony. How can a Nikah be valid Islamically, if part of it was unislamic (i.e witnesses?) The witnesses required are for the bride. In this case it would be her father/brother/uncles/grandfather. Naturally these people would be Muslims.
