Question for Moms or mom-to-be

Hey,
I am in my 11th week of pregnancy and I am having a really hard time getting an appointment with a female ob/gyn (everyone around here is male and I really don’t want to see a male ob/gyn). I met with my doctor earlier in the pregnancy when I was 5 weeks along but now my next appointment is for June 16 when I will be in my 15-16 week. The clinic I visit has several nurses/nutritionists who keep track of you to make sure that nothing is wrong but I haven’t had any ultrasound done yet. Also when I last met the nurse she told me that in my 15 week I should have a “maternal serum screening” test which tests for down’s syndrome/trisomy 18/ neural tube defects. She said that my appointment of June 16 may be cutting it close and the results might not be accurate so I should see a male doctor before my appointment (who is available). I really don’t want to do that for obvious reasons. My dad is a physician and he said that june 16 will be fine to get the test done and its not too late but I am still wondering what other people have done. Please share your experiences about what tests you had done by this point in your pregnancy and what I should do next? Other than this everything else is normal (sometimes I have a little cramp like feeling but that last for 5 min or so and goes away).

Re: Question for Moms or mom-to-be

i dont think so i went for any such test during mine....only the dr did my ultrasound once every month and that was totally fine...i too dont prefer male ob/gynaes...

Re: Question for Moms or mom-to-be

I'd not worry overmuch, cp. Take your prenatal vitamins and eat right, get as much rest as you need and Inshallah all will be just fine.

I always went for ALL the tests at ALL the right times and know what? They really tell you nothing. I mean, with my first son. I had ultrasound at 11 weeks and they told me that he had omphalocele (meaning that his intestines would be outside of his body when he was born and would require to stay in NICU for his first 2 or 3 months.) Well, at 14 weeks, I had another ultrasound and they said "WOW! No omphalocele!". I had the 15 week bloodwork where they look for certain down syndrome markers in the maternal blood and was told that there was a 95 percent chance that he had downs. He didnt. I was sent for three VERY long tests for maternal diabetes, those were also negative.

IDK. Sometimes these tests make nothing but stress for the mom-to-be. Relax, wait for the doc that you like and are comfy with and let nature take its course! Inshallah all will be fine.

Keep us posted!! :)

Re: Question for Moms or mom-to-be

1st of all tell me y dont u go to male doc??i dont think so dat in this situation u should think abut it watever the right doc is available male or female u must go...there is no problem from every point of view.wat would u do if there ll b not any female doc bychance??u would diliver ur child at home??(with excuse).this is a stage when u need lot of care of urself n for ur child.n i dont think so there is such type of test in 15th month...it could b speciall mayb but there is only monthly checkup n ultrasound n some blood tests.change ur thinking plzzz n help urself.im surprised dat u r not getting appointments n u r satisfied but not ready to go for any male doctor..?all the best for u..

Re: Question for Moms or mom-to-be

First of all r u a doctor that you know there is no such type of test. I am a medical student with a doctor in my house (my father) so I think I know what I am doing and where in the world did I say that I am satisfied for not being able to get any appointment? Please refrain from making stupid assumptions when replying to a post. I am concerned thats why I asked about this. It purely my choice if I choose to go to a male doctor or not. I don't want a male doctor looking up my a** unless its an emergency and its not an emergency. If you are surprised at how I am not getting appointments then please suggest how I can get an appointment since you seem to be such an expert in pregnancies. I would really love to hear your reply.

Re: Question for Moms or mom-to-be

cp, dont get all riled and upset, its not worth your while! Take care of yourselve(s), stay healthy and happy! You are doing all the right things, so what if you miss the maternal serum test (which is highly unreliable and can cause SO much unnecessary stress!!)

You will find, probably for the rest of your life, that people have very strong opinions and have no hesitation in giving them to you whether you want them or not!! ESP when it comes to pregnancy - and even more so - parenting!! Best to just say "aha, acha, yes I see. I see. Acha." and then go on your merry way.

YOU always will know best for YOU and for yours! Dont forget that....I did a couple of times, I let my instincts go and I paid the price for it and so did my son. And it turned out I was right all along. So beleive in yourself and dont let anyone get in the way and make you falter!

Re: Question for Moms or mom-to-be

^ My god you are so nice. I always feel good reading your posts, you have no idea how relaxed I've been after I read your last post (where you talked about your son and what the test predicted). At least some people here are encouraging and understanding. You're the best!!!

Re: Question for Moms or mom-to-be

Hey, don't worry cutiepie. Everything will be fine.

Regarding your ultrasound, I remember I had my first one at 16-17 weeks. Some people have it even later.

If you don't want to wait for bloodwork, go see the male doctor and ask him to write you up for the bloodwork but hold off on the physical exam until you are comfortably set up with a lady doc. Anyways it is the nurses/medical assistants who take your vitals and blood.

Personally, like MO3 said, I did not get any of the protein tests done because I heard they may/may not accurately represent a situation and results may get you worried unnecessarily. However, some people go for them and there is no harm. But I chose not to.

Re: Question for Moms or mom-to-be

dont stress :)

I had all my tests done except for the down syndrome one. I didn't want it and from memory the doctor was hinting that I didn't need to get it done.. so I didn't..

as for male ob/gyn.. there's nothing really wrong with it. I did have a female ob/gyn. but i remember one time she wasn't around so i male attended instead.. no big deal. They're just doing their job. Also, when your in labour and lets say you're screaming for epidural.. you may get a male doc then... and at that time.. u really dont care!!! lol

everything will be ok.. just stay happy

Re: Question for Moms or mom-to-be

i just read horizons post… :halo:

dont stress okies… u do whats best for you and the baby… some places do a lot of tests, and others dont. some places do ultrasounds on every visit (like my gyn did) and others only get like 2 done in their whole prengnancy.. it makes no difference. As long as you are content and your baby is healthy and growing inside… its all good.

Main thing, just stay positive.. and look after yourself. Also, prob take those supplements… i believe they are good for you and bubz

Re: Question for Moms or mom-to-be

I know sadzzz. I really wouldn't care during labor but I am just not comfortable right now with the male doc. Hopefully everything will go well. Insha Allah!

Re: Question for Moms or mom-to-be

When u are in labor and they need an expert's advice even though you have a female doctor around, you can't do much if a male doctor comes inside to do the internal test.

The hospital dont garantee a female doctor for that u can go to a expensive private institute and pay for such a service.

Even though I have a female gyn, once i went inside the examing room and was suprised to see her son doing the examination. If I had refused, I guess I would not have gotten another appointment that soon, it turned out that the male doctor, the son was such plesant doctor, he took time for me and was very understanding.

I asked him all the things I could not ask his mom and felt very relaxed afterwards.

Re: Question for Moms or mom-to-be
