Question for Americans

**calling out to ALL Americans:

I often hear Americans refer to petrol (fuel for cars) as “GAS”.**

how can a liquid (eg petrol) be a gas? I say you go back to school and learn ur “3 states of matter” :rotfl:

**unless anyone here has a logical explanation  **

Re: Question for Americans

It's actually Gasoline but we call it gas.

Re: Question for Americans

Short for Gasoline.

However, I prefer "fuel"

Re: Question for Americans

the correct word is “Petrol” :snooty:

because thats the British word…and English language comes from England :snooty:

Re: Question for Americans

English people settled in US and populated US for the most part, so they are the one who screwed it. If anyone, British are the ones to get the blame for this :k:

Re: Question for Americans

English is a messed up language to begin with. You can’t screw with it any more than it is

Re: Question for Americans

:rotfl: oh man you TOLD her…haha take that impulse
O W N E D :hehe:

Secondly, only about like 30% of British people speak correct English, too ( just as only a small amount of Americans speak absolutely correct English). The rest just “slang it” :smokin:

Re: Question for Americans

Well then, you’s no longer gots permission to be speaking no English from here on out, aight?

Re: Question for Americans

if thats the case…and British should get the blame then why is it that here in britain no1 says “gas” ?

Re: Question for Americans

Because they call popsicles “tip tops” :rotfl:

heh shall i go on?

Re: Question for Americans

well americans have their own ways...when they fart and actually give off GAS (as in the matter not gasoline)..they call it "passing some air"...

now cmon it cant be air..air is like a mixture of nitrogen/oxgyen..but ur fart is a chemical compound and thus shud be called GAS...nomesayn

Re: Question for Americans

Gas is a mixture of Hydrogen and Carbon and both are non-metal.

Re: Question for Americans

too many south asians(paki,indian,bngladeshi.....) seem to get caught up in this dilemma - whether to stay true to their colonial english textbooks or to "get down" to american english.
but u know wat ya'll...i say end all of it, cos the fact is - In america we speak "AMERICAN"...yep i dont call it english...its "AMERICAN"... a differnt language in itself.
no screwin around now.....go to www.english2american.com

Re: Question for Americans

Niggaaaa

Re: Question for Americans

that is one of the most narrow minded point of view i’ve heard. every language has a dialect and who the hell has the write to say that british english is the best or worst

Re: Question for Americans

My dad always used to say...

Fill her up with Ethel... lol

I think short for ethanol...don't know if they still make that or not.

Re: Question for Americans

They actually just bark it
or at least do a VERY close imitation of it :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Question for Americans

...and been very successful at it too....j/k

Re: Question for Americans

LOL hahaha..:rotfl:

Re: Question for Americans

Impulse like ‘Gas’ is used for Gasoline, Petrol is used for ‘Petroleum’. So when u say the word is petrol its still wrong :stuck_out_tongue: BTW Both Gasoline and Petroleum are generalized words for flammable liquid, a crude oil u can say. While Octane, Diesel etc starts getting more specialized words for specific formula’s.

:bravo:
