Question abt Terri Schiavo

I thought that this was one of the most the most inhumane, cruel things I ever heard. And something that I just cannot comprehend is that this woman WAS able to swallow fluids and baby foods that were fed to her. OK, so they call a feeding tube “life support” and the courts say they can disconnect it. But WHY WHY WHY did they prevent her visitors from giving her water and/or food by mouth? How did they get away with that one?

Re: Question abt Terri Schiavo

What really?!!! I didnt knew ..

I wanted to find out more about this case, but stupid CNN stop showing about her as soon as the pope became ill.

Re: Question abt Terri Schiavo

...actually, her mother brought bottled water to give to her during one of her "supervised visits"...she was told by the police officer on guard the if she tried to give it to her daughter she would immediately be arrested and lose all of her visitation rights. When the protesters outside heard of this, they started trying to bring water too and there were a number of arrests - including arrests of children who were sent in with water to see her.

This type of thing would be illegal to do to an animal...how did we EVER allow it to happen to a fellow human?

Re: Question abt Terri Schiavo

Only in America

Sometimes, I think that civilised behaviour left the American colonies along with the rule of the Crown. This kind of action would never be tolerated in any of the nations that recognise Her Majesty as head of state…

Re: Question abt Terri Schiavo

...well that's all well and good, but doesnt answer the question....ie., how did they legally get away with what they did to her? I can understand the thing about a feeding tube being "life support" but I dont understand how they can justify their refusal to let the parents feed her orally....

Re: Question abt Terri Schiavo

Because the parents were deemed to have no legal rights over her. Her husband, as her guardian, was deemed to represent Terri’s wishes, and he persuaded a judge that Terri wished to be allowed to die.

Re: Question abt Terri Schiavo

MS, I do understand abt the parents having no legal rights etc and that the judge agreed with the husband about her wish to be allowed to die....

BUT I thought assisted suicide was illegal...thats what this all boils down to. The parents wanted to give her sips of water and were prevented from doing so. If she drank, then you could argue that she did indeed want to live....

Re: Question abt Terri Schiavo

Again, the court was persuaded that she didn't drink etc because she wanted to , rather it was nothing other than an instinctive reaction. The court was persuaded that Terri was unaware of her own existence.

Re: Question abt Terri Schiavo

I don't understand regarding oral feeding...
usually they do NOT put in a feeding tube if she can safely eat and drink. I'll be she was an aspiration hazard which is why they did the tube....

Re: Question abt Terri Schiavo

yes...she was able to swallow liquids and baby foods but not enough to sustain her...thats why the feeding tube.

Re: Question abt Terri Schiavo

^ so there is your answer..then why the hubbub, bub?
