This question may appear stupid.
Anyway, I ll go to Pakistan this summer after a loooong time. I have a Laptop and I want to u Internet at home. I never really used 56k modem in my life and my Laptop dont even have a modem
Anyway, my family there dont have a telephone at home. They used to have it, but canceled the contract cause everyone there uses a mobile phone now.
The question: Do I need to have a telephone contract there, to use the internet with those “great” internet cards? I ll just be there for 6 weeks, so I dont wanna make a contract there. How is the DSL situation in pakistan? I would prefer to use dsl there, would take my modem them with me, but I guess need to make a contract then.
Its like this: they used to have a landline but cancelled it 1 or 2 years ago. They dont intend to get a landline again cause of their mobile mania whatsover.
Do I need a landline contract to use internet cards? Thats the basic question and I dont have a freaking idea abt it :I
landline contract? hmmm ofcourse not. You can also have your dial up connection through your mobile number but for that you will have to get some device :D. I just heard about this new thing 2-3 days ago :).
You can get a data plan with one of the cell phone providers. Then all you need is a cable to connect your phone to the laptop and you're good to go. My brother does the same thing in Karachi and gets better bandwidth than with the modem. Also check to see if they WiMax connections in that area. I don't remember the company, but someone here mentioned a company here (search the computer forum) that provides those connections. Dunno if they do it for short periods tho.
I got a N73 which can be used as a modem via usb or bluetooth.
So that would be no problem. But how much would that cost me? As I mentioned before, wasnt there since a long time and dont know the prices. So how much would be a new sim card and how much would it cost to surf the web?
I actually never used my mobile as a modem before, sorry for the noobish questions :D
Both Wateen and PTCL provide DSL or wireless connections. So check out their websites or simply contact their offices when you get to Pak. I had PTCL DSL connection when I was in Pak a couple of months back and it worked great.
Then your best bet would be to get PTCL Wireless (Vfone). It works on cards. It's good for calling overseas, landlines, SMS and Internet.
They charge you about 4 Rupees daily whether you use it or not and about 6 Rupees per hour for Internet. 2,000 Rs. to get the phone and I think you get balance of 2,000 Rs. (Not sure now, they might have changed it.) You can also rent it from local PTCL office, if you know people. :)
Try worldcall cable service. If you do not require a very high speed. 512kbps is just 1200 Rs. per month. And I dont think you need a yearly contract or anything but they do take 3 months payment in advance.
