My daughter is 3 weeks old Mashallah. I have noticed for the last 2 weeks she sleeps a lot during the day, afternoon and evening but she is awake all night and early morning. Basically between the hours of midnight and 8 am it is very difficult to get her to sleep. During the day after I feed her, she literally falls asleep while suckling or in my arms right after the feed. At night/early morning she tends to stay awake during the feed and then it takes 2 hours to get her to fall asleep after the feed. She is also more irritable at this time and tends to cry more. The only way to calm her down is to swaddle her and hold her while I have the quran playing in the background. It takes a LONG time for her to fall asleep like this. Sometimes I have to hold her for 30 minutes or more before she falls asleep and then another 20 minutes to make sure she is in a deep sleep before putting her in her bassinet. If I put her in the bassinet before she is in a deep sleep she wakes up right away crying.
Any tips on how I can re-set her clock so she sleeps at night/early morning and stays awake more during day, afternoon and early evening? Also, any tips on how to get her to fall asleep on her own? I know people put their babies in the bassinet while awake and the baby falls asleep on its own. Is it too soon for that? At what age should I try to train her to sleep on her own? Also, how do I go about doing it if she cries the second I put her in the bassinet? Thanks!
Re: question about newborn sleep patterns/schedule
Whoa she’s three weeks old. She is not going to have a schedule right now. She can’t differentiate between day and night. Her schedule will probably kick in by 12 weeks when she’ll probably sleep 6-7 hours at night. Do whatever it takes to put her to sleep till 3 months. You can’t spoil a baby that young. Also if you want her to sleep on your own make sure you always put her in a bassinet and don’t ever cosleep! I cosleep and I’m paying a huge price for that.
As for making her sleep on her own, yes ideally put her down when she’s awake but drowsy so that she learns to fall asleep on her own. If she takes a pacifier, it’ll help her soothe herself to sleep.
I know you’re frustrated at the lack of schedule and sleep but it will get better soon. Welcome to motherhood…the land of erratic sleep and erratic schedules.
Re: question about newborn sleep patterns/schedule
Try after 3months…baby is too small right now so do what she wants right now…it is tiring n only solution is you also sleep whenever she sleeps even if its daytime…it will get better soon inshaAllah! my baby is 10 months n still does not sleep through the night…he still sleeps in daytime i tried alot discussed with doctor n she said its fine!..he’s very light sleeper since birth n wants pindrop silence…all babies are different…you just have to make sure that they get enough amount of sleep in 24hrs…
3 weeks is way too early to start a routine, like others have said they don’t know until they are 3 months. Bestest advice I got was sleep when the baby is sleeping during the day
Re: question about newborn sleep patterns/schedule
i co-slept with mine. it got me resting when he was resting so that when he’d wake up at night, i wouldn’t be such a zombie. BUT in our case, it meant co-sleeping until he was about 11 months old when he was ready to make the transition into his crib, so its a long-term commitment, fyi.
