I don’t know about MEdina, but Makkah is a muslim only city. Non-muslims can’t go in. I remember seeing the signs warning the non-muslims to turn back when we used to go for ummrahs from Riyadh.
anyways, my question is, when did this start? what was the reason behind it? at the time of the Prophet (pbuh), we all know there were non-mulsims living in makkah so why bar them later?

The Visa – The primary condition required for any human being to enter Makkah or Madina is to say with his lips, La ila ha illallah Muhammed ur Rasulullah meaning that ‘there is no God but Allah and Muhammed (pbuh) is His Messenger.’
if you translate in english god and allah is same?
so it should read "there is no god but god and muhamed(pubh) is his messenger"

^^…The Non-Muslims were evicted from the Hijaz after they broke a truce…They were settled in other parts of Arabia except for Hijaz (The area encompassing Makkah and Madina.)

Well its to ward off all the people who would wanna destroy these two places.
But I still don't understand after much scrutiny and luggage check why people of the book or any other religion can't enter? Maybe then we would be able to spread the message more effectively.

thats exactly why some of the scholars insist on not using the English word God to translate Allah because some low-minded people (no offense intended) cant make out the difference between God and god....

it is starts with negative " there is no god......
at some point there must be translation since all humans dont speak
arabic.
when first time arabs intriduced islam pakistanis have no idea
of arab language.

since arabic grammar is not exactly what english grammar is like, a word to wrod trasnlation will not be very good, but u can still get one....
la = no
ilaha = deity, any being worthy of worship
illa = except
Allah = Allah (name of the One True God, and like all proper nouns, cannot be translated)
so the first part means (word put together to make sense) "there is no being worthy of worship except Allah"....
now is that difficult to comprehend????
