Are proposals really a surprise like they show in TV shows and movies, or is the woman expecting it?

My guess is even if they are expecting or 100 percent sure, still they are supposed to act surprised , it is the culture. If they do not act surprised the guy who spent tons of money on buying that ring will be disappointed.

So, the surprise is not that he proposed, its more how he proposed and the moment he chose...

I think it's a little bit of both. If a romantic relationship is stable and progressing well, a woman has the intuition that there is strong likelihood for marriage in the near future.......but she might not know exactly when the proposal will take place........this is where the surprise element comes in.

I have some gora girl friends and their proposals were surprises. They had a good feeling that marriage was a strong possibility......but not knowing when the offer would take place.....they were pleasantly surprised about the proposal:)

I had a "gora" proposal. I knew it was coming, we choose my stone together. But when it happened and how it happened was a great surprise.

It was one of the happiest days of my life :-)

same story for me as somehowcollide! it was such a beautiful moment when he got down and proposed to me, just me and him. the ring came from him and his heart not anyone else. <3

Aw man! I feel left out now. My MIL was between he and I the WHOOOOOOOOOOOOLE time! Can you believe it? Yeah, I was not happy about that.

Surprised at the status changed from 'living together' to 'engaged'... still a few more 'obstacles' to go before the prince charming, being too generous, finally decides the he'd like to marry the girl after all.

Some of them are surprises, some aren't....

With my 'gora' proposal I kinda expected it cos he was behaving a bit strangely...
