Question about drafting cover letter

Hello everyone!

To give you a brief background on myself, I have recently moved from Canada to New York, USA and have been unsuccessful at finding any work at all thus far. My educational background is in Public Health but most of my working experience has been in the automotive finance industry. I have about a year long experience of working in Public Health field that I gained through summer jobs.

My question for all of you is whether or not I should incorporate the fact that I, actually, legally immigrated to the country in my cover letter. The reason this popped in mind is that - and I realize I could be totally cynical - given the current political climate, what if an employer looks at my Canadian work experience and thinks that I just hopped over on this side of the border and they don’t want to proceed with me in case I turn out to be a liability in the long run.

I mean, I have been sending tons of e-mails every single day even to jobs that just require high school diploma and like 6 months of clerical experience but didn’t even get a phone call for those roles even. Needless to say that it’s been really discouraging.

Can someone help me out here, please?

Re: Question about drafting cover letter

There isnt really anything wrong with adding that info. But dont make it too obvious. Like , just a casual mention of your status in the country that you are seeking work in and then start focusing on your experience and skill set.

Keep it very short and to the point.

In my last employment , I used to get over 150 cv's a week. Never had the time to go through all of them. Long cover letters and confusing CV's always lost my interest , short Cover letters and to the point , well constructed , easy to read CV's caught immediate interest.

you could mention your legal work status in your resume , where you give Misc info like ( car license, nationality etc )

Good luck in your search

Re: Question about drafting cover letter

Also , I would suggest that you use different avenues to search jobs . only emailing doesnt work . Word of mouth? calling up the companies directly and trying to speak to someone in HR ? go and meet the recruiters , if you strike a good relationship with a recruiter they do help immensely . Directly drop CV's in places of Interest . Use careers page options of the companies etc
