Question about a slur. **Not directed towards anyone**

This is not directed towards anyone, nor am I trying to be cute. I just want some info.

The slur for Christians in Pakistan is Kurunta. Where does this come from and what does this mean? Just curious.

What about Choora? Is that a zaat of people?

Re: Question about a slur. Not directed towards anyone

I am not too familiar with the originas, but I am assuming "Karanta" is modified version of "christian". And thats all. I am not sure if it is used as a negative slur or just a matter-of-fact.

Choora is a zaat, if I am not wrong. These are the people who clean homes, streets etc. In many parts of Pakistan, especially Punjab, the zaat is the vocation of the people, like sonaar (goldsmith), loohaar (blacksmith) etc. Generation after generation ends up working in the same field of business.

Re: Question about a slur. Not directed towards anyone

well may be “karanta” is derived from “Kristani” (correct word ) means “The follower of christ” which is the word for christian in urdu or hindi i suppose in some parts of north india well christians are also known as “isai” in hindi.

about choora i dont have much idea but in india in some villages people call a young boy as choora and a young gal as chori.

Re: Question about a slur. Not directed towards anyone

Re: Question about a slur. Not directed towards anyone

Re: Question about a slur. Not directed towards anyone

Faisal bhai whether you like it or not, those terms are derogatory, demeaning and create class distinctions.

Re: Question about a slur. Not directed towards anyone

So we should use them as often as we can so people are properly distinguished.

Re: Question about a slur. Not directed towards anyone

Re: Question about a slur. Not directed towards anyone

Nope, Christians are called Isayee. “chooRa” is probably a derogatory term for Christians in Punjab.

Re: Question about a slur. Not directed towards anyone

choora is a word used for sweepers , nothing to do with christians
