Quality of Centuries or Quantity of Centuries?

Sachin Tendulkar is, undoubtedly, most compact batsman Cricket has ever seen, there is no doubt on his class and on him being legend. The writer of this article has previously rated Sachin Tendulkar as “King Arthur of Cricket”. This article and stats are not meant to degrade Sachin Tendulkar in any way, these are just stats showing one bitter-reality of Tendulkar’s career.

Centuries are scored to win the matches, you seldom see a batsman scoring century yet on losing side. Once a batsman scores century, he has high hopes of being on winning end and also Man of the Match. Number of players across the world has most-majority of their centuries in winning cause however some batsmen can’t taste the triumph even after scoring a Ton.

The jinx of Tendulkar’s ton has been a myth, there is no point to say he is selfish but myth is yet to be solved that why he has such high percentage of centuries in losing cause. Out of his 48 centuries, 33 times India won, 13 times India lost, 1 time it was tied, and once the match was no-result. This means that Tendulkar’s percentage of centuries in win is 68.75 but then equation comes in mind that, out of his 33 match-winning centuries, 9 centuries are against minnows; Kenya, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

Sachin Tendulkar in eye of Indian contemporaries.

Lot of people say that due to India’s weak bowling attack in Tendulkar’s era, his centuries never helped India winning. Lets analyze whether this excuse is vindicated or not, we will have a look at some of Tendulkar’s contemporaries who played with same co-called weak bowling line. **RememberTendulkar’s winning percentage of centuries is 68.75.

**- Saurav Ganuguly: 22 ODI centuries, 18 times India won. Winning percentage of centuries is 81.81- Virender Sehwag: 14 ODI Centuries, 13 times India won. Since 2003, his all 13 centuries have been match winning. Winning percentage of centuries is **92.85.

**- Yuvraj Singh: 12 ODI Centuries, 9 times India won. Winning percentage of centuries is **75.00
**

  • MS Dhoni: 7 ODI Centuries, 6 times he was on winning-end. Winning percentage of centuries is **85.71
    **
As MS Dhoni plays in late order so if we consider his those innings where he scored 80+, only 3 times he was on losing end and 10 times on winning end.

Sachin Tendulkar’s contemporaries prove that weak-bowling is not an excuse of his low percentageof match winning centuries. Had weak bowling been a reason then Sourav Ganguly would have never scored 18 match winning centuries in same era. There is some unknown mystery behind SachinTendulkar’s century jinx.

**Sachin Tendulkar’s contemporaries from World.
**1. Brian Lara: 19 ODI Centuries, 16 times West Indies won. Winning percentage of centuries is 84.212.

Sanath Jayasuriya: 28 ODI centuries, 24 times Srilanka won. Winning percentage of centuries is 85.713.

**Saeed Anwar: **20 ODI centuries, 16 times Pakistan won. Winning percentage of centuries is 80.004.

Mohammad Yousuf: 15 ODI centuries, 14 times Pakistan. Winning percentage of centuries is 93.33. Only his first century was in losing cause in 1998 against Australia and since then his all 14 centuries were match-winning.

  1. Mahela Jaywardene: 13 ODI Centuries, 13 times he was on winning end; all match winningcenturies. Winning percentage of centuries is 100 %.

Nathan Astle: 16 ODI Centuries, 14 times New Zealand won. Winning percentage of centuries is **87.5

**Now all the above players belong to average ODI Teams in last 20 odd years, there is no one from South Africa or Australia, yet all the batsmen maintain higher winning percentage of centuries than Sachin Tendulkar’s 68.75. This clearly suggests that “Quality is always better than Quantity”. **Even Younis Khan’s all 6 ODI centuries have been match winning.

**Super Trivia: **Out of Sachin Tendulkar’s 33 match winning centuries, 9 are against minnows; Zimbabwe, Namibia and Kenya. If we exclude his 10centuries(against minnows) then his winning percentage of centuries is only 63.15

****Sachin Tendulkar’s ODI Centuries against Pakistan

**Last time he scored century to beat Pakistan was way back in 1996 and since then there is nothing. 5 ODI Centuries against Pakistan but 4 times India lost. Only his 2nd century against Pakistan could see India winning it, except that his 4 ODI centuries went in vain as Pakistan clinched the victory in all 4 matches.

India’s epic failures despite Tendulkar’s Ton.1. Rawalpindi 2004 against Pakistan: After winning 1st match of series in Karachi, India were set target of 330 by Pakistan at Rawalpindi in 2nd ODI of Series. Sachin Tendulkar scored 141 in Pakistan’s reply to 329 but still India lost the match by 12 runs.
2. Ahmedabad 2005 against Pakistan: In 48-over ODI Match, Tendulkar scored 123 in India’s total of 315. It was a crucial match for Pakistan as India was leading 6-Match ODI series by 2-1, it was Inzamam and Pakistan’s day when they successfully chased 316 in 48 overs and with thatTendulkar’s another century went in vain.
3. Peshawar 2006 against Pakistan: After losing Test series against Pakistan. India set 329 to Pakistan in first ODI of series at Peshawar and Tendulkar scored another century. In Pakistan’s chase, bad light came in play when Pakistan were 311-7 in 47 overs. Pakistan won match by 7 runs on D/L Method. Tendulkar’s century once against couldn’t be a match winning one.

  1. Hyderabad(Deccan) 2009 against Australia: 7-Match ODI series was leveled 2-2. In 5th ODI of series, India were set target of 351 by Australia. Sachin Tendulkar got massive 175 yet he was on losing end. When Tendulkar got out, India needed 19 runs of 18 balls with 4 wickets in hand. Match was won by Australia by 3 runs.

  2. Bengaluru 2011 against England: A World Cup match and India set target of 339 for England to win, including Tendulkar’s 120. Who would have thought that India will not win? The match turned out to be one of best matches ever played in World Cups. It was tied and once against Tendulkar’s ton couldn’t help India in winning.

  3. Nagpur 2011 against South Africa: India set the target of 297 for South Africa to win whereTendulkar scored 111 runs. It was Tendulkar’s 2nd century in 2011 WC which couldn’t help India winning. RSA successfully chased the target of 297.

Sachin Tendulkar’s Test centuries. The sad story isn’t restricted to just ODI Cricket, it gets even worse when it comes to Test Cricket where India is the number one team right now. Out of his 51 Test centuries; only 20 times India won, 11 times India lost and 20 times it was drawn.

Sachin Tendulkar’s winning percentage of centuries in Test Cricket is only 39.21. And if we exclude his 8 centuries against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh then, out of his 43 Test centuries, only 14 times India won.
If we compare his this stat with one of his contemporaries from Pakistan, i.e Inzamam-ul-Haq, then some readers might get a shock to see Inzamam-ul-Haq scored 25 Test centuries; 17 times Pakistan won, 6 times drawn and only 2 times Pakistan lost. Inzamam’s winning percentage of centuries is 68

Re: Quality of Centuries or Quantity of Centuries?

Time for Sachin to Score a Ton Tomorrow Insha Allah

:jhanda:

Re: Quality of Centuries or Quantity of Centuries?

lolz

do u remember entire 90s sachin was solo player of india, none where there to support him like present team.if sachin got out match is gone

plus he has lot of 80-90s where india won the match, infact he has the highest number of man of the matches then any other players out there.

Re: Quality of Centuries or Quantity of Centuries?

plus he has twice the number of centuries compare to players u mentioned.

that means they did even try to help or came close to scoring a victory

Re: Quality of Centuries or Quantity of Centuries?

Mahela's century in world cup final was in a loosing cause, so its not 100% for Mahela.

Re: Quality of Centuries or Quantity of Centuries?

Someone just 'retired' form same era, I guess he will never be known for his contributions.

Re: Quality of Centuries or Quantity of Centuries?

Do names like Dravid, Azhar, laxman and Ganguly to name a few, ring any bell.

Re: Quality of Centuries or Quantity of Centuries?

Sachin is undoubtedly the greatest accumulator of runs in the history of the game but I would always put Viv Richards ahead of everyone. He is in a different league in my opinion, the greatest player of our time

Re: Quality of Centuries or Quantity of Centuries?

dravid and ganguly came in late 90s around 98-99

even they had lot of centuries in which india had lost,it was during this india had better line up.

few i can remember is dravid scoring agains't south africa in south africa.

check my above post,do u remember entire 96 world cup very match sachin had to deliever after his wicket india wouuld loose miserably,it continued till 98-99 before other players coming into scene
hw can u even compare other players who don't even have half number of centuries of sachin, atleast this guy had tried to add runs to india, while other ones got out without even trying mind all other guys too played good number of matches

cricket is a team if others didn't perform you can't blame sachin for that,it's just india had bad bowling line up.

Re: Quality of Centuries or Quantity of Centuries?

sachin and dravid had almost same number of winning contributions in test matches or good innings where they both played well and india lost of bad bowling

one player been better at one particular point of time, while other one had inuries.coming to odi dravid doesn't come anywhere close to sachin

Re: Quality of Centuries or Quantity of Centuries?

anyway i don't want to discuss on this, won't make him any less of a player what he has achieved :)

Re: Quality of Centuries or Quantity of Centuries?

I disagree, Sachin is streets ahead of Richards.

Re: Quality of Centuries or Quantity of Centuries?

The only point I was rebutting was your earlier point that Sachin was the Sole player for India in 90's. he was really great and use to scare me when playing against Pakistan, but there were other giants around as well.

Re: Quality of Centuries or Quantity of Centuries?

Did not watch the entire 90s and most of 200s till 2 yrs ago. But I hear the 1st 8 years of Sachin's career, he was mostly a solo act. This reminds me of the Gavaskar Vishwanath comparison. Viswhanath, when he would score a century, India would win, gavaskar mostly scored a century during losses. That did not mean Gavaskar was a selfish player - somethimes luck is inolved - you play well and bowlers play well, you got a victory.

Saurav Ganuguly: 22 ODI centuries, 18 times India won. Winning percentage of centuries is 81.81- Virender Sehwag: 14 ODI Centuries, 13 times India won. Since 2003, his all 13 centuries have been match winning. Winning percentage of centuries is 92.85.
So Sehwag had 13 winning centuries since 2003 - probably coincided with Sachin, Dravid et al peaking. The law of large numbers is a weird thing - the longer you stick around, these outliers disappear, and then the winning percentage for a batsma becomes a function of his bowling support. Also, unfair comparison, when Sehwag was on, he was simply the best. But he is not on enough - it is feast or famine with him. Clearly when he feasts, the opponents dont have a chance.
**- **Yuvraj Singh:
12 ODI Centuries, 9 times India won. Winning percentage of centuries is 75.00
**Sachin's winning % is 73% in 1-day cricket (35 wins out of 48 decisions and 1 tie. So Yuvraj no better!
- **MS Dhoni
: 7 ODI Centuries, 6 times he was on winning-end. Winning percentage of centuries is **85.71 Too small a sample size - statistically invalid. His time coincided with India peaking,

Sachin's 51 centuries in Tests led to 20 wins, 11 losses and 20 draws. Not bad, considering the bowling that (non)-suported him

Re: Quality of Centuries or Quantity of Centuries?

No batsman in my opinion ever dominated fast bowlers or was as destructive as Viv in his prime. Conditions are much more batting friendly since the 90s, better bats & protective gear, restriction on the number of bouncers, neutral umpires, decline in the quality of fast bowling the world over, batting friendly pitches. Plus Viv had an aura and presence at the crease that no batsman has been able to match since then

Re: Quality of Centuries or Quantity of Centuries?

lets just say we agree to disagree. Both were great but Sachin is in a class of its own. It is the only time in my lifetime that I have seen anyone being compared to Bradman and even he felt that Sachin was great.

Re: Quality of Centuries or Quantity of Centuries?

One additional piece of statistic that would be helpful in analyzing Sachin's winning percentage (or lack of it) is to see what the rest of the team scored in the games that Sachin made a century in and India lost.

Re: Quality of Centuries or Quantity of Centuries?

hasrat un ghunchon peh heay jau bin khil;ay murjha gayay

Re: Quality of Centuries or Quantity of Centuries?

I agree. Sachin is in a class of his own. We love to live in nostalgia and ofcourse Viv was amazing but sheer consistency and his score in different different conditions are just too overwhelming to ignore.

Re: Quality of Centuries or Quantity of Centuries?

In all this analysis of percentage you missed following…

  1. Sachin has won 33 ODI matches with his 100s. Next best is 24 and 18 and others are not even half of him. Of all the Sachin hundreds there is hardly anyone(except for last one) which you can say was cause of loss. If other cants rally then you cant blame him for that. One good example is his score 175( In 124 balls) while chasing 351 against Australia and India lost by 3 runs. Can you really blame him for that? That was a mind boggling inning in a chase.

  2. If you are tying to prove someone is match winner or not then why stop at centuries. Best way would be look at how many Man of the Matches he has won compared to others. Tendulkar has 62 MOMs. i.e he wins MOM in one in 7 game. Next best is Jaysurya at 48 in almost same number of matches. All others are 32 and below( worst that 1 in 10). Now … that shows how good a match winner he is.
