ok some questions about Lal Masjid, how old is the mosque exactly, what exactly happened to the Ghazi brothers father. Did they run madrassahs in Southern Punjab as well? Where did they get their money from to expand the mosque? Why was Ijaz ul Haq so protective of them?
Re: Q's about Lal Masjid
I think the Mosque was built in the 60's under the Ayub admin.
Ghazi brother was recomended by somone, and was initially apolitical. He joined the Katam-al- Naboowat movement of the time and lead so processions through Islamabad...
The fater of the Ghazis rose to prominence when he threw his weight behind the Jihad against the Russians in Afghanistan by helping to recruit Jihadis. The state I guess as a reward, must have looked the other way as he expanded beyond the original 25-50 foot space originaly provided for the mosque too the current 500 acres.
Ejaz ul Haq is his father son offcourse, and since his father was very close to the Ghazis father, Ejaz feels he has to carry on the legacy. Dont know where else they had madrassas or mosques...
This is what I have read so far.

The Lal Masjid was built in the 60s by the father of late Molana Ghazi. Zia is said to have supported the mosque financially and used it for his own jihadi purpose, the Lal Masjid had received land grants from Zia. I don't know whether they run any Madrasa in the souther Punjab. And to your question why Ejazul Haq has been so supportive of them I would only say that apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
Re: Q's about Lal Masjid
The other question post-lal masjid, I couldn't follow last minutes of the mis-event, was Rashid Ghazi captured or killed?

killed, allegedly by his own people as he tried to surrender. although it may ahve been one of those things where he had asked his ppl to kill him rather then allow him to be captured alive. or maybe the military killed him and blamed it on his ppl to avoid increasing the backlash from the psychos going apeshyt.
Re: Q’s about Lal Masjid
It’s seemingly hard to get specific information about it’s development. I do understand that AR Ghazi did his masters in international relations from QAU, and in fact was considered quite well read and moderate till his fathers murder (again the nets very vague about who was suspected of killing his father). That event turned him increasingly militant more so after the US invasion of Afghanistan. In the CNN documentry he allegedly met OBL and agreed with some of his policies?
As far as the Mosque and madrassah itself, they seem to have expanded only recently, what i don’t get is if it expanded after the 04/05 crackdown or before.
Also, while it’s mentioned his father was heavily involved in the 80’s recruiting of Mujahideen, I’ve not read much about it before..
The government’s long reluctance to use force at the Lal Masjid had a simple explanation: it wanted to avoid bloodshed. But it has prompted other, less charitable, interpretations. The two brothers and their father, who founded the mosque, had close connections with Pakistan’s powerful intelligence services. As a reminder of the extremist danger, the Lal Masjid helped bolster General Musharraf’s image as a bastion of “enlightened moderation” in Islam. So too, without belittling General Musharraf’s undoubted courage, did the latest attempt on his life, by machine-guns aiming at his distant helicopter.

The Aaj news correspondent was saying that Ghazi got his Masters in History form QAU (1987--89) and not International Relations.
Relating to the killing of the father there are three theories that I know of: 1) Shias did it 2) Someone on the inside (within the mosque hierarchy) did it 3) Some Major killed him because of his alleged involvement in his domestic affairs.
The mosque and Ghazi senior have always been prominent in Islamabad. I think Jamia Faridia has been around since the 70s. Ghazi senior was known for his vitriolic Jumma Khutbas against Shias in the 80s.
I have not heard anything about Lal Masjid recruiting for the Afghan Jihad and I grew up in Islamabad. Also, why would any one want to recruit from a place as sleepy as Islamabad of the 1980s?
Also according to Aaj news, Lal msjid was named as such after Lal Shahbaz Qalandar and Jamia Faridia after Baba Farid Shakar Gunj.

the difference in thought, and approch of those noted gentlemen and this institution is so immense that its not even funny.
its equivalent to naming an institute after Gandhi and it be run by RSS, or have an institute named after MOther Teresa and run by IRA, or an institute named after Imam Hussein and run by al qaeda.
Re: Q's about Lal Masjid
I think it was initially built as a sunni mosque back in the early 60s'. I would suggest the goverment holds a referendum to determine the wishes of people of G-6 and G-5 as who should run the mosque - the peceful sunnis or the extremist salafies/deobandies. I think 60% of the people would vote for them.
Re: Q's about Lal Masjid
i dont think deobandis = salafis = wahabis
while there may be deobandis who are salafis in their views now but still call them deobandis, from what I know about deobandis their viewpoints are not the same as these groups

If you are thinking as Fraudia mentioned i.e. Deobandis = Salafi = Wahabi then you are wrong. You probably are referring to hari-pagri = "Sunnis" as 'peaceful'.... well religious differences are a separate debate but 'peaceful' wise those hari-pagris aren't angel either.

I am not talking about harri pagries. They are not in majority. They control only a few sunni mosques. Majority of the suuni mosques are run by mohallah people and we never see such things over there.
Re: Q's about Lal Masjid
I did not say that they are all equal what I want to say that they are moslty invloved in the violent version of Islam these days.
Re: Q’s about Lal Masjid
If deobandi/salafis/wahabis are involved in ‘violence’ and hari pagri is minority, then which ‘sunni’ is in majority? ![]()
