ps, simple relocating the small items, and u can create a big difference.. :)
Surely there is a difference between the 2 triangles. The 2nd one is a little larger in size and due to this extra room exists for the empty block.
Look carefully and you’ll se the difference.

exactly sadi ji.. FOR EXAMPLE, u take away a basement level of an apartment building, now u WILL put it on the top floor, but .. u know, building to khalaas ho chukee hogi na ? halaanke basment floor itna chota sa hota hay.. :)
the confusion is coz both of them seem to be right angled triangles with same base and height (implying same area), both built out of the same blocks, but one with an extra space, thereby implying it has more area.
however, the catch is in the assumption that both figures are triangles. by rearranging the blocks in the first one, we can not get a triangle - the hypotenuse of the second figure cannot be a straight line. it's actually a bent line.
akchually, the first one isnt a triangle either. it's hypotenuse has to be two bent lines too.
i gave this puzzle to my maths teacher some years ago..and he gave me the answer in two paragraphs…(in danish)

Yes indeed creates a big difference. The yellow-orange is still the same size, but when the red and green big and smaller trade places messes everything up.
