i dont think there should be any problem other than which finger.

Index (Shahada) finger. But some said one shouldn’t use finger on text while reading.

And I have seen people using index,right hand thumb and right hand pinky.

Is that “someone” is authority on Islam and can pass shari’ah compliant judgments on such next to nothing non issues then yes I would open thread for answers.

Quran was not in written shape at one place for many years
Few have written different pieces
So no hadees
Only a man ‘Napak’ (jis par ghusal wajib ho) can not touch
Otherwise there are ‘Aadab’ to read it , No strict order

My tajweed teacher, from dawat e islami, says its extra sawab (thawab) to touch the Quran (with adab) whilst reading. He says its sawab to read Quran and extra sawab to touch the Quran

it is Not ok if the text is old style ink that would smear,

otherwise clean hands pointing a finger towards what you want to read is actually a good reference, because even if you are distracted you can come back to the place you left from1

Not sure why this is even an issue with anyone. Just like bookmarks, a finger acts as a line mark. So it helps..doesnt hurt.
