Putin Woos Pakistan as Cold War Friend India Buys U.S. Arms

Re: Putin Woos Pakistan as Cold War Friend India Buys U.S. Arms

Not that simple, India has always tried not to sit in any camp even during hieght of cold wars. India started non align movement under leadership of jawahar lal.

What putin wants cannnot be done, India cannot be a coalition in your camp. India itself trying to be a major power in world affairs, India's natural inclination is towards secular democratic countries hence cooperation with US gets more.

India always had friends in both US and USSR, Iraq and Iran, Israel & Palestine etc etc. India does what is good for itself and Russia should do what is good for them in long run.

I wouldnt read too much in to this new move by Russia, its just a tactic to get more leverage. Afterall India is world's biggest buyer of arms and Russia and others have lined up to sell from their bullet to most secret tech.

Re: Putin Woos Pakistan as Cold War Friend India Buys U.S. Arms

This is indeed good news for Pakistan, as others have pointed out that its important to have good relations with all important world players and well as with ones neighbor. In the long run this move might not be that beneficial to Pak since they can get similar Russian weapons from China and neither can Russian invest in Pak economy as much as others such as China. Basically Pak can get everything that Russia can offer plus more from China, but this move is beneficial in a sense that it will help pave the path for an eventual greater cooperation among the Asian nations. That might decrease military tension, end the regional arms race and prevent the Western nations from using the Divide and rule strategy to suppress economic development in the area. This move is an effort by Putin to strengthen the SCO alliance, and decrease tensions between Pak and India so they can collectively go up against what Putin believes to be the ultimate threat to Asia, an American led take over/intervensions, which is true. Pak can use the Russian friendship to decrease tensions with India.

Re: Putin Woos Pakistan as Cold War Friend India Buys U.S. Arms

Urgh, why Russia.

Why does Pakistan have to go running around to other super powers? We have the best and brightest that we produce and stupidly export out or chase away from the country. As a result, brilliant minds from Pakistan are not working IN Pakistan. Expats and their kids are increasingly distancing themselves from their Pakistani identity, unlike Indian expats' kids who go back to India and take back their skill and knowledge and give back to their community in India. We Pakistanis have no such pride, in fact, we deny that we event went to Pakistan one year ago for some cousin's wedding, we just don't mention it.

Pakistan has everything it needs to be self-sustained really, if they just got their heads out of corruption and every man wasn't trying to fill his own pockets with his own greed, you'd see what a great country Pakistan could possibly be.

-get rid of the corrupt
-put criminals where they belong: in jail or hang them.

The country will become much more manageable.

MOSCOW: Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and Russian minister V. Mutko sign the joint statement after the Pak-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission meeting on Friday.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Russia on Friday expressed their determination to remove all impediments in the way of finalising plans and projects already agreed upon.

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar led the Pakistan’s delegation while Russia’s was headed by Minister of Sport, Tourism and Youth policy Vitaly Mutko, who is also co-chair of the commission.

Both countries said they would cooperate in various projects related to oil and gas exploration; construction of floating LNG terminals, North-South gas pipeline from Gwadar to Nawabshah; sharing of seismic and geological data; enhanced oil recovery; LPG processing facility and gas purification plants; modernisation of oil and gas infrastructure; innovative technology solutions in coal industry; and building and renovation of various power generating units in Pakistan, especially those of Russian origin.

The two sides discussed cooperation in transnational energy projects, including CASA-1000 and TAPI (Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India) gas pipeline.

Major Russian companies in the energy sector including Technopromexport, Rostec-Global Resources, Rushydro International, Power Machines, Inter RAO, United Engine Corporation, and Stochinsky Institute of Mining have shown keen interest in cooperation with Pakistan.

Dar hoped collaboration in trade, economy, science, technology, agriculture, education and culture will gain new impetus due to continuous high-level interaction. “We are moving forward in the right direction.”
Russia’s Mutko said both the countries enjoy strategic geographical locations and are endowed with rich human and material resources, which offer immense possibilities.

Separately, senior executives of the Russian bank Vnesh*TorgovBank (VTB) met Dar, and offered a credit line of $1 billion for energy projects in Pakistan. They were also interested in visiting Pakistan for further financial transactions. Dar suggested that the bank should also participate in other projects besides energy.

A delegation of another Russian public-sector enterprise, Tyazh*promexport, headed by its First Deputy Director General Maxim Shabala, also held talks with Dar and reiterated its interest in rehabilitating and refurbishing Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM). Russia has also shown willingness for another state credit line of $1 billion for the mill’s refurbishment.

The finance minister told the delegation that the government was working on divestment of 26 per cent equity in Pakistan Steel, hence the company should acquire the equity instead of extending loan to the PSM.

Dar assured the Russian side for early settlement of the issues of mutual claims and financial obligations and requested them to expedite a draft agreement on the subject in accordance with the earlier agreed parameters.
The inter-governmental commission is the most important mechanism to comprehensively discuss all spheres of bilateral relations between the two countries, especially energy sector projects.

During the talks, Dar was assisted by Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Resources Jam Kamal Khan, Board of Investment Chairman Miftah Ismail, Ambassador to Moscow Zaheer Janjua, OGDCL chairman and senior officials of ministries of finance, industries and production, and petroleum.
