Re: Pashto/pakhtu for beginners…
Walaikum Dear Brother.
Nice, how are you my Kashmiri Brother? By the way, the word KASHMIR is a male name amonmg Afghans [Pashtuns], one of my mum’s uncle is Kashmir Khan.
Don’t now how it became a male name.
I don’t know a lot about the Afghans of Kashmir, but i do know that there were over 300,000 Afghans estimated in 1992. All of whom spoke Pashto, whilst those in India mostly adopted Urdu/Hindi as their spoken language. They have played a major role in protecting their Kashmiri Brothers, they were also responsible for the creation of Azad Kashmir, although they could take over the whole of Kashmir at once [from the Indians], but i wonder who stoped them from doing that? Anyways, i like my Kashmiri Muslims, like every Kashmiri, i as an Afghan love to see a UNITED Kashmir free from foreign influence. It is VERY rich in natural beauty, Allah SWT has gifted it with mighty rich beauty! Mash’Allah…
By the way, can anyone tell me what language the Kashmirian speak? Do they speak a language of their own?

Kashmiri speak a language called Kashmiri- which is a mixture of persian, sanskrit, dardic- and it uses SVO (Subject verb object) unlike Pashto (SOV)
Kashmiri is spoken by the kashmiris in the valley- due to foreign influences the kashmir in the south of kashmir speak mirpuri (a langauge similar to punjabi/hindko) and Pahari (similar to hindko), in the North and west- the dards speak shina, gilgiti, ladakhi- these people are somtimes regarded as non-kashmiris because historically they have nothing in common with kashmiri
finally hindu pandits speak kashmiri and hindu kashmiris speak dogra (another dialect of punjabi)
kashmiri are not a single ethnic group- Kashmiri refers to anyone of kashmir -but in my opinion kashmiri are those who are inhibitants of kashmir-
Re: Pashto/pakhtu for beginners…
Most Mirpuris and Paharis living in AK who used to come to the Valley to graze their flocks before 1947 could speak Kashmiri. Currently, all Mirpuris and Paharis who live in Indian-occupied KAshmir (i.e. Poonch, Rajouri, Uri) can speak Kashmiri. Also, the Pahari spoken in these regions is so heavily influenced by Kashmiri (in vocabulary) that often it seems closer to Kashmiri than to Hindko (which has been influenced by Pashto). Whilst all the regional languages of Kashmir are important, Kashmiri is the national language.
Re: Pashto/pakhtu for beginners...
Which other regional language is Kashmiri closer to in linguistic affinity?
Re: Pashto/pakhtu for beginners…
Hill Punjabi is closest, followed by standard Punjabi, then Sindhi. Kashmiri has considerably influenced Punjabi and Sindhi, because these regions were under Kashmiri rule in the middle ages.

Wa alaykum Salam Wa rAhmatullahi Wa barakatuh bro. .
The elders in my family often say that we are the Right Arm of the Pakhtun people. My mother certainly had a lot of Afghan / Pathan friends here in UK.
Im making a website about Kashmiris at the moment.... Although, not sure whether or not to make it public.
Re: Pushto and Kashmiri [Split from Pashto/pakhtu for beginners... ]
I'm part Kashmiri and part Pathan. My Dada was full Pathan (Khan). My Dadi was almost full Kashmiri (Butt). My Nana and Nani were mostly Kashmiri. My husband's family is full Kashmiri. They used to be Butt.
I'm told that my family has some mix, some British and some Nepalese somewhere along the line.

Family lineage is paternal so you are what your daadaa (paternal grandfather) was.. Ethnicity is not about racial purity, it is about paternal lineage and culture one identifies with. :)
Re: Pushto and Kashmiri [Split from Pashto/pakhtu for beginners… ]
What do they call themselves now?
By the way I am a kashmiri too, I dont speak the language though. My dad says that my great great grandfather migrated from Kashmir to Punjab.
Re: Pashto/pakhtu for beginners…
interesting…it is also a common name amongst Hindus and Sikhs in North India..eg. Kashmir Singh, Kashmira Singh, Kashmiri Lal, Kashmir kaur.
Re: Pushto and Kashmiri [Split from Pashto/pakhtu for beginners... ]
btw..Pashaura Singh also a common name. 2 of Maharaja Ranjit singh's sons were named Pashaura Singh and Kashmira Singh.:)
Re: Pushto and Kashmiri [Split from Pashto/pakhtu for beginners… ]
Y is it only paternal…i duno i don’t like that idea…i consider both sides to be equal…so i think i am as much of my Dad’s side as my Mum’s…but yea i always heard that growing up…that, u take ur Dad’s name, so that’s wot u r…but i don’t like that…i mean i have as much of my Mum’s blood running thru me as my Dad’s…i think that whole idea is wrong ![]()
Btw, my Mum’s side is Kashmiri (Butt) and my Dad’s side is hmm, i duno i think u wud just call it Punjabi i guess…these last few months i’ve really been interested in learning about my roots (esp. Mum’s side, as i know nothing about their history), so it was nice to read some of the posts here ![]()
Re: Pushto and Kashmiri [Split from Pashto/pakhtu for beginners... ]
Well I prefer my moms family as well and I admit we have equal blood from eah side but heritage is through the dads side... Only Jews or 'children born out of wedlock' who don't know who their father is trace their lineage through the maternal side.
Re: Pushto and Kashmiri [Split from Pashto/pakhtu for beginners… ]
I didn’t say i prefer my Mum’s side…but yea, who u r shud be the mix of both ur parents…i just don’t get Y heritage and lineage etc. has to go thru ur paternal side only, when everyone knows we come from both parents
…well i’m gona ignore the norm or wotever anyone else says, and say i’m both Kashmiri (maternal) AND Punjabi (paternal), not just Punjabi ![]()

I would like to bump this thread, because I'm interested in knowing if there are any similarities between Pashto and Kashmiri.
