Actually I have seen a situation where while the couple was engaged, people within the family were raging. The khala wanted the girl's rishtha, and some other person wanted the guys rishtha. Even up until the nikkah these people angrily tried to break up this rishtha, even after the nikkah they tried to cause problems, but alhumdulillah they are married now and she is expecting a baby. But dude this wasnt even a love marriage, this guy n girl were single for sooo long, why didnt people ask for the rishthay then. Why wait just after they get engaged to cause a fire...dufuses

it could be looks.. or sometimes not even. many times people reluctant to propose someone because of fear of being rejected and thinking that the 'other party's' expectations are too high and they would not be able to fulfill the certain criteria of the 'other party'.. but when they finally got to know that the 'other party's' "quest" doesn't turned out to be very hi fi thingy.. then they finally say 'now could it be possible'?
anyway.. its very common thing in our culture.. many many engaged people do hear comments like that afterwards

"uski baat pakki ho gayi hai" or something like that but it was a straight up refusal. I wasnt there when this happened, or i was and i was too busy playing with kids or something.
