Purpose of Afterlife?

What is the purpose of after life or I would say the Eternal life. People claim to be working for the after life in this world so there is a purpose for them for this life. But ever thought of it …What is the purpose for that Life, which seems like a fairy tale world.

Re: Purpose of Afterlife?

...this world is like a trial.if we do good then we'll get reward for it in the hereafter in paradise but if we do bad we'll get punishment for it in the hell.afterlife will be a reward or punishment.

Re: Purpose of Afterlife?

The monotheistic fundamentalist concept of eternal paradise is used to appeal to the carnal and selfish desires of man to provide a simplistic exlpanation that will encourage man to act in the manner their dogma instructs them to.

The concept of rewarding someone with a secular eternal existence for living a spiritual life escapes me.

Re: Purpose of Afterlife?

Purpose? What sort of purpose would you consider life in this world serving...

Re: Purpose of Afterlife?

purpose of afterlife is to provide the male with their universal needs. sex and food. virgins and rivers of milk.

Re: Purpose of Afterlife?

Can you verify this understanding according to Quran? Provide references. Thanks.

Re: Purpose of Afterlife?

^^? what do u mean? isnt heaven characterized by the rewards the do-gooders will get? the rivers of milk and the 72 hoors and the gardens in which they will live forever?

Re: Purpose of Afterlife?

rest is fine because Quran characterize it for BOTH men and women not only men as you posted and mentioning of hoors etc. however, can you provide a quranic reference to the number of Hoors?

Re: Purpose of Afterlife?

"The example of Paradise that is promised for the righteous is this: it has rivers of unpolluted water, and rivers of fresh milk, and rivers of wine-delicious for the drinkers and rivers of strained honey..." (47:15)

"Serving them will be immortal young boys. When you see them, they will look like scattered pearls." (76:19)

i dont know if the 72 part is from quran or from a hadith. but isnt it conventionally held to be a standard by muslims?

Re: Purpose of Afterlife?

actually this is what i found just right now

http://qando.net/archives/003747.htm

still dont have the ayat where the number 72 is mentioned though. :shrugs:

Re: Purpose of Afterlife?

I concur.. I am looking for a reference of 72 ...

not to mention, our scholars never propagated mutaawatir and saheeh ahaadeeth about the similar rewards a woman will get in heaven. It's sad... for example I heard a hadeeth from Shaikh Yusuf Estes which is in Bukhaari, it tell that a man will make sajdah to his his wife (of this world) [provided both enters paradise] thinking of her as Allah because of the beauty she will have...

IT is also mentioned that the same wife will be the leader of all hoors in the paradise.

Re: Purpose of Afterlife?

This site has grave errors and is totally anti-islamic.. Quran specifically talks about “Hoorun Eeen” .. Hoors with bigh eyes.

Re: Purpose of Afterlife?

It seems like there's traditional Islam, and then there's Newsweek's Islam.

It's quite fashionable among secular commentators of Islam to make everything about a) gender or b) sex. It's not an uncommon suggestion that even the boys mentioned in 76:19 are for sexual gratification...seems like the Western mind just can't get itself off of sex.

To be fair, a lot of the attitudes with regards to the Hoors (their perpetual virginity, and so on) were heavily loaded on during the Abbasid period...a rather decedant time.

To my knowledge, the number 72 is mentioned in a weak hadith (can't even find the text of it), and so is hardly cannonical. 72 Hoors and 80,000 servents (?!)...

I'd hardly call that mainstream Islamic theology, though. In all seriousness, though, the sexualixed interpretations may just as likely be the result of Muslim culture...I mean, we have our own share of dunkard poets, no?

Re: Purpose of Afterlife?

ok so u're saying quran refers to women with big eyes but not a number like 72?

Re: Purpose of Afterlife?

Correct.

Re: Purpose of Afterlife?

Isnt the sex of hoors ambigous ? Or even their nature (man ? jinn ?)
We know both Jinn and Man will inhabit the heaven, and Jinn have the same reward as Man, the hoors from what ive read no one can be sure as to what their exact nature is ?

Re: Purpose of Afterlife?

It was my understanding that the term Hoor may even be gender neutral…true/false?

Found the reference to 72:
Collected by Imam at-Tirmidhi in “Sunan”](Sunan al-Tirmidhi - Wikipedia) (Volume IV, Chapters on “The Features of Heaven as described by the Messenger of Allah”, Chapter 21: “About the Smallest Reward for the People of Heaven”, hadith 2687) and also quoted by Ibn Kathir in his Tafsir (Koranic Commentary) of Surah Rahman (55), ayah (verse) 72: "It was mentioned by Daraj Ibn Abi Hatim, that Abu al-Haytham 'Adullah Ibn Wahb narrated from Abu Sa’id al-Khudhri, who heard the Prophet Muhammad (Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him) saying, 'The smallest reward for the people of Heaven is an abode where there are eighty thousand servants and seventy two wives, over which stands a dome decorated with pearls, aquamarine and ruby, as wide as the distance from al-Jabiyyah to San’a. That particular hadith collection does contain weak ones, although I don’t know what the status of this particular one is.

Re: Purpose of Afterlife?

Dr Zakir Naik Says:
The word hoor is actually the plural of ahwar (applicable to man) and of haura (applicable to woman) and signifies a person having eyes characterized by hauar a special quality bestowed upon a good soul, male or female in paradise and it denotes the intense whiteness of the white part of the spiritual eye.
The Quran describes in several other verses that in paradise you will have azwaj which mean a pair or spouse or companion which means you will have spouses or companions pure and holy (mutaharratun means pure, holy).
“But give glad tidings to those who believe and work righteousness, that their portion is gardens, beneath which rivers flow. Every time they are fed with fruit there from, they say: “Why, this is what we were fed with before”, for they are given things in similitude; and they have therein companions pure (and holy); and they abide therein (forever)”. [Al-Quran 2:25]
“But those who believe and do deeds of righteousness, We shall soon admit to Gardens, with rivers flowing beneath - their eternal home; therein shall they have companions pure and holy: we shall admit them to shades, cool and ever deepening”. [Al-Quran 4:57] Therefore the word hoor has no specific gender. Mohammad Asad has translated the word hoor as spouse and Abdullah Yusuf Ali as companion. Therefore according to some scholars a man in paradise will have a hoor that is a beautiful maiden with beautiful big and lustrous eyes and a woman in paradise will get a man with beautiful big and lustrous eyes.
