Some vendors are flexible and would agree to send a sample (paid off course) but others are too stringent about their minimum order quantity. Any idea how to get less MOQ from these vendors.

What is MOQ? Minimum order quantity?
If yes, provide them some background of ur project. And the future potential OQ.
If the vendor or his boss has high IQ, he will Q your order in without any Q.

I am a regular buyer on aliexpress, the retail version of the same site but have only made one purchase on Alibaba. It was a smooth transaction overall, only had to negotiate the price a little and not MOQ. Paid through paypal and was in constant communication with the vendor. Will not recommend using China Post or any other slow service for anything that weighs more than a few kg though, as they ship it through sea and it takes months to reach.
Now I need to purchase fabric but most of them have MOQ of 1000s of yards which is not what I am looking for. I have posted for Quotation but in my experience even if you explicitly mention that you want a lower MOQ, people still contact you and communicate to tell later that it cannot be managed so I don't really know what really works.

Ok thanks. Was the quality good as you expected? Also since you were able to negotiate the price, I’m quite sure the MOQ will be negotiated too. Chinese, like Indians do want to make a sale by all means.

The issue negotiating with Chinese is communication gap. I've been following up with a few leads and the process is pretty much same as finding contacts for procurement. (Which I have only seen others do, no personal experience so far).
Quality of the paintings I ordered was good and actually better than the pictures but what can possibly go wrong with abstract oil paintings anyway :)

I hear you but i'd suggest keep contacting more sellers and you'll get a hold of someone who can get ready on your terms. Now regarding the quality i think if somebody wants to cheat they can do so even in paintings. But the biggest problem in things like electronics. Say for example if you order 3000 (MOQ) headphones how'd u make sure all of them are i working order before pushing them forward?!
