You can find some great Punjabi literature. It's been taught in Punjab University as a language and its literature is infact very wide. (take for example: Bhullay Shah)
As far as the script is concerned, well, we use a borrowed script to write Urdu, why cant it apply for Punjabi?

I have already mentioned this before in a thread in cafe couple of weeks back that the universal rules established by linguists do not apply on the language punjabi.

First, it does not have a unanimous script of writting agreed upon by all punjabies. Keyword: Unanimous.

Punjabies in India, for the most part, if not all, write the language in GURUMUKHI script whereas Pakistani punjabies use Arabic script…

Second, although there have been many great poets and writters in the language, it did not evolve to the extent of it being considered as a FORMAL, and LITERAL language. It is more of a langauge that is widely used for conversation and not for literature.

Take the example of urdu. SOME OF the literature of Urdu is not even understood by a common speaker of Urdu, especially the old one… (anyone remembers Qissa Chahaar Dervaish by Meer Amman Dehlvi:D) The diction often is different and more eloquent than the spoken words. Some expressions are meant to be written than expressed in Urdu. Punjabi lacks that right there…

Ofcourse, such a description often offends some emotional punjabies but it is, not in any way, a disrespect to that language. It is just a judgement based on some rules. Nothing more, nothing less… Great language and I avoid it because of the reasons mentioned above by Lajawab

I am an emotional punjabi, I dont feel offended a bit. Because I believe that punjabis on our side of the border are totally responsible for current state of affairs of this beautiful language, including me… If punjabi is still alive and kicking, thats solely due to Sikh people. I salute them

I am Punjabi. Our elders never spoke punjabi with us when we were kids, their reason was that learn urdu first in proper accent and then punjabi. If you learn punjabi first alway you will have punjabi accent while speaking urdu, which do not do justice to any language.
So the result, proper urdu and proper punjabi. I switch between the two when required of course with a dash of many english words in between (inevitable nowadays).

Hindi and Urdu are quite similar to eachother, yet different scripts are used...
So what?
we are debating why Punjabi and Punjabis are considered rude...
To be honest, I am a Punjabi but sadly I dont speak this language myself fluently. Still, I consider it to be more expressive and powerful than the other languages.
If we talk about the use of curse words in Punjabi, well I agree that it has many. But it all depends on the speaker, I have seen really soft spoken and polite Punjabi speaking people.
Besides, Urdu is not an absolutely pure language itself (as far as the cursing is concerned. Urdu speaking people very frequently use the words "salla, kameena" etc etc.. which I find offending if someone says infront of me.

I totally agree with Sadaf here. Both of her posts (49 & 54) have the answers.

as far as people who talk in Punjabi in a different way (as per you guys, "in a rude way"), they talk in Urdu the same way too. Have you heard those punjabis talking in urdu?. so is Urdu not a valid language when they talk?

The same thing written in one language gives a slight different meaning in the other. Their are certain words associated with certain emotions, feelings, etc. The same word if translated, gives a different sense. So there are certain emotions (and feelings) that you can present exactly the same way in punjabi while in any other language, you may not feel satisfied. And same is the case with all the languages.

and yes, Spanish sounds weird as compared to English so would you not consider it a language.

and to make this whole discussion simple, here is the meaning of Language by Cambridge Dictionary, ""a system of communication consisting of sounds, words and grammar, or the system of communication used by the people of a particular country or profession.""""
and Punjabi fulfils this criteria.

Sadaf Khala: comparing Hindi with Urdu is comparing apple with oranges. I can bet you won't understand Original hindi if spoken.. Those diction is not in urdu.. just because you know few hindi words by watching indian movies/dramas does not make those words as part of urdu.. The current spoken Hindi is not even hindi but urdu with a mix of hindi/sanskirat words:)
