Punjabi language and new generation

Is new generation of Punjabis shy about Punjabi language?

Is it true that they want to learn Urdu instead of Punjabi?

What is your opinion of this behavior?

Am I a ‘ganwaar’ if I speak in Punjabi?

Re: Punjabi language and new generation

The fault does not lie with the new generation but the previous generations. Everyone is so stuck on the whole “oh punjabi is such a backwards language” etc. I know several people who speak punjabi at home, but if you asked them, they would deny it. I’ve even met some who told me they couldn’t understand one sentence in punjabi.. well until their amma called and gave them a proper lecture in full punjabi :hypo:

I think it’s sad because it’s just a language and not to turn this into india vs. pakistan but the indian punjabis are so much more proud of their roots and language than pakistani punjabis will ever be..

Apart from this, I’ve heard urdu is also slowly dying as more parents are obsessed with english these days.

Urdu? I think now its English and this is not just limited to Punjabis. Urdu speaking families also prefer their children learn English.

Re: Punjabi language and new generation

I don’t know if they are insecure but I find it to be a disturbing trend. You should learn your child as many languages as you can, why leave a language out because you think it’s “backwards” or “paindu” .. I’ve seen mothers turn all red and hush hush their little once if they say something in punjabi in front of guests or whatever. My 6 year old speaks both punjabi and urdu and I’ve never felt the need to dig myself down in a hole if he speaks to me in punjabi in an urdu gathering.

Re: Punjabi language and new generation

People who live in Villages are called Paindu. Paindu = Paind+du. Paind means Village.

Re: Punjabi language and new generation

In Karachi… every Punjabi is labeled as Paindu… Though, they don’t know actual meaning but for them… they are all paindu… :hmmm:
