Punjabi Dialects?

AsSalaamu Alaikum,

I have a question: A friend of mine and me have been going back and forth on what the proper punjabi words for certain things are. It is possible, it maybe a difference in dialect. So please share your views on which is the correct form.

Khar/Kar=Home (punjabi?) Yes or no

Ghar/Ghurr=punjabi (in urdu and punjabi) yes or no

Kehnta=Hour (punjabi?) Yes or no
Ghenta/Ghainta=Hour (punjabi) yes or no

Thanks everyone.

Re: Punjabi Dialects?

Walaikum Asalam,

Yes. Kar (pronounce liked “kaam kar”) is the Punjabi pronunciation for the Urdu word “ghar”
Also, yes… Khenta is the Punjabi pronunciation for the urdu word “ghenta”

:chai:

Re: Punjabi Dialects?

How many different dialects are in Punjabi language?

Re: Punjabi Dialects?

Manys :)

Re: Punjabi Dialects?

what does dialect basically mean?

Re: Punjabi Dialects?

My Punjabi is of Malwi accent of Patiala, I always found Majahi dialect of Amritsar, the most weirdest, "karna waa, jaana siga" etc

Re: Punjabi Dialects?

a particular form of a language that is peculiar to a specific region or social group.

Re: Punjabi Dialects?

why not karna siga or janaa waa?

Re: Punjabi Dialects?

Lehja.......

Siga=was
Waa=is

jaana hega, aidaan odaan (as opposed to iss tara oss tara) are the terms used by immigrants from east punjab...amritsar, jalandhar, gurdaaspur etc...

Re: Punjabi Dialects?

Boli, like awadhi, braj, maithi are for hindi. i believe there would be difference in spoken Sindhi in the entire region of Sindh :)

just it seems too different, like Malwi use haanji for yes and Amritsaris says too lound aaho :D

Re: Punjabi Dialects?

but isn't lehjaa changes from individual to individual. Is it only, lehja or how particular words are pronounced in a particular region along tone in which they are uttered.

Re: Punjabi Dialects?

Kachhi, Tharri, LaaRi, Utradi, Wicholi, Sari are some of the dialects in Sindhi. Even people claim that Gujrati, Memoni are also dialects of Sindhi

Re: Punjabi Dialects?

i would say the english term dialect could be applied to regional version of a language........ like its said that potwari, majhaa are dialects........ and they do have a lot of difference..... its difficult for people to comprehend different dialects.......so i think 'dialect' encompasses a vast degree variation...

Re: Punjabi Dialects?

siga is past. I don't think so

Re: Punjabi Dialects?

oh othay gya siga = he went there
oh othay gya waa/hega = he has gone there

Re: Punjabi Dialects?

The vast area Punjab covers (both in India and Pakistan including Indian areas which later excluded from Punjab like Himachal and Haryana), Punjabi must have more dialects than any language in subcontinent

Re: Punjabi Dialects?

hega is quite near to hoga… I recently read that Urdu is modern form of Punjabi, hence Urdu is mother tongue of people living in Punjab :hmmm:

Re: Punjabi Dialects?

I would agree to that statement regarding the vastness........... but there is a bit of politics involved as well......... like siraiki and hindko to be classified as separate languages altogether...instead of dialects of punjabi........

Re: Punjabi Dialects?

:hehe: There is no relation…opposite in fact,

hoga = might have happened (uncertain), hega= has happened (certain)
