It has increased manifolds in the recent past, last decade or so.
There are bhangra songs, punjabi characters/families and a whole lot more. Punjabi songs, lyrics are more prevalent.
Previously it used to be just one or two sikh sideline comedy characters in bollywood.
Why do you think that is?

I think they got so much exposure for many reasons.
Punjabi audience is spread over vast area as compared to other Indian communities. They got viewers in Pakistani Punjab, who can relate to language and customs. Then there is majority of overseas Indians, who either themselves belong to Punjabi community or have interaction with them on regular basis at desi food centers.
Punjabi culture is able to add entertainment value in form of high beat music and energetic dance like BhangRa.
I kinda believe that many big production houses are owned by Punjabi community and then there are artists (actors, singers, etc) who belong to this and its natural for them to promote their community culture.

until, i guess late, 2000, the Bollywood was dominated by Urdu speaking story writers, script writers, lyric writers hailed from the Urdu rich province, Uttar Prades. they left mark of the Eastern UP culture on Bollywood. Poorbii zabaan was heavily used in the movie characters depicting playing the gaaoN-waalaa characters.

I think one may find a community dominating the entertainment industry of India, but each community gets a representation there.. We got to watch Gujarati , Rajhistani and Bengali culture as well in recent times.

I observed that Indian Punjabi is easier to understand than Pakistani Punjabi...
Second argument of dominance is that... They are open heart and welcoming people and music create attraction... I can not understand Abrar Ul Haq,.. but I like his songs....

You probably have exposure of Indian Punjabi through bollywood.. Otherwise, Amarta Pritam is a difficult writer than our Fakhr Zaman

Lol, that's because it's not Punjabi. They usually just throw one or two Punjabi words in Hindi (or Urdu rather lol) sentences, change the tone and non Punjabi viewers think they're listening to Punjabi.
