Speaking of water, have you guys come across the idea that water from one’s own country is somehow different from water elsewhere?
Recently, a Punjabi friend of mine commented that her grandmother and aunt recently came back from India and brought back a few bottles of water from a river that is near where they live. Not sure what they intended to do with it but I found that interesting.

So culture comes through water? :D
flow of water can be connected with culture. Thus Punjab and Sindh got more similarities in language. The level and flow of water in particular area also affect psyche of people living there. Thus Lahoris used to more full of life when Ravi was flowing.
Re: Punjabi culture of Pakistan v/s Punjabi culture of India
I really didn't like Indian food (I lost ten pounds in a week) but the closer I got to Lahore geographically the more I enjoyed the food. Like I probably ate more food at a dhaba near amritsar then anywhere else in India. So I think similarity of spices and stuff is there.

Are you talking about the affection with water of your country or places you consider sacred? Interestingly, India's holy places and rivers lies in India and therefore there is no conflict in their religious thought and nationalism. This is not true for Pakistani Muslims.

I think both are rather interesting, although I'm not terribly familiar with places that are considered sacred on the subcontinent. What are some places that are considered sacred?

Its many ashthaan (Hindu pligrim sites) scattered all over Indo-Pak. Ganga is a sacred river. Its water 'Ganga jal' is used at many religious occasions. "ganga ashnan' is quite equal to doing Hajj for hindus.
Re: Punjabi culture of Pakistan v/s Punjabi culture of India
Social drinking is an integral part of Indian Punjabi culture, from what I've told and observed, and perhaps that's the reason why they appear teeny bit more hyper and happier than their Pakistani counterparts.
There are fundamental similarities but the differences are also equally apparent.
Re: Punjabi culture of Pakistan v/s Punjabi culture of India
I think upper class Muslims of Punjab (chohdris, Maliks) also consume alcohol, like upper class waderas of Sindh. That Raisani joker from Balochistan always looked like drunk. Its the masses of Muslim Punjab, which consider it taboo. Religiously, Sikhs are also not allowed to consume alcohol like Mulsims. besides, Sufi shrines of Sindh and Punjab says that people in these areas are addicted other things like Bhang and saawi.
Re: Punjabi culture of Pakistan v/s Punjabi culture of India
^ Saawi? Alcohol consumption is increasing in Pakistan also (no doubt) but I don't think its on the same scale as Indian Punjab.

I thought sindhis were more similar to balochis?

Being Sindhi, I can't understand Balochi, but not only I can understand Punjabi, but can read it as well.

Saawi.. green bhang.. Thadal. This might not be equal to Indian Punjab, but youth in rural areas of Pakistan is adapting many variation of drugs.

But do Sindhis have cultural similarities with Balochis?I heard 40% of Sindhis are of Balochi origin.

There are different theories. some used to believe that all tribal castes of Sindh are actually Balochs, but latest research proves otherwise. 9 of Balochistan's districts are Sindhi speaking including Lasbela and Sibbi. They got dialects which have been used in Shah Latif's poetry.
So there are similarities in culture of Sindh and Baluchistan like clothes (embridery, etc), but as far languages are concerned Balochs can easily understand and speak Sindhi, but same is not true for most of the Sindhis.

Culturally balochis are similar to pashtuns. That another thing that the Baloch have a lot of interaction with Sindhis as well.
