Punjab University team declared ‘best delegation’ in international contest

LAHORE (April 23 2008): Punjab University (PU) students and debaters won the title of “Most Outstanding Team” in an international debate contest, the UN and European Model conferences known as EuroMUN organised by the University of Muenster, Germany, between April 1 and 5 and the University of Maastricht, Netherlands, between April 17 and 20.
Up to 450 delegates from 35 countries participated in the contest/conference and PU delegation of debaters/students has been declared the “best delegation” in the international contest. The 12-member PU debaters’ team was supervised by Director External Linkages Professor Dr Najma Najam and Professor Dr Iftikhar Baloch.
Sher Afgan Malik from PU Law College was declared the “outstanding delegate” of Disarmament Committee and won Diplomacy Award while Maria Mujib from PU College of Information Technology was declared “outstanding delegate” of the World Environment Organisation and was awarded with Diplomacy Award. Two other PU students Amina Khan of Molecular Biology and Molecular Genetics and Tasneem Sarwar from PUCIT were also declared outstanding delegate and both were awarded with Diplomacy Award. Amina Khan sat on Sochum (Social Human & Cultural Committee) while Tasnim Sarwar participated in WTO (World Trade Organisation).
Four more PU students were given “honourable mention.” Amir Ijaz for participating in Green Peace, Hassan Naqvi for Specpol (Social, Political and Economic Policy), Nishat Kazmi for representing China in General Assembly and Aziz Nauman Butt for Journalistic Coverage of the Conference. Mian Naqib Hamid of Institute of Social & Cultural Studies has become the first ever South Asian student who chaired a committee in the EuroMUN. Naqib chaired Specpol.
It happens for the first time in the history of Pakistan that any public sector university has won such an important title at international level. The Pak delegation was widely appreciated and a film produced by PU Sociology Department student Mian Naqib Hamid was also shown in the conference amid tremendous applause.
Vice Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran and Student Affairs Adviser Dr Mujahid Ali Mansoori have congratulated the delegation. A reception will be arranged for them after their arrival to Pakistan.
