LAHORE: Punjab police and trade unions have been accused of racial profiling for asking Pashtun residents and shopkeepers to submit details and particulars of their stay and businesses in the province.“All respected Pashtun members are informed that intelligence officers of the Government of Punjab visited our office and asked us to submit data of all the Pasthun members who are directly or indirectly linked with the market, to respective police stations,” says a notice issued by Anjuman-e-Tajiran Bilal Market, Lahore this week.“It is, therefore, advised to all Pashtun brethrens to submit their photographs, copy of CNICs and visiting cards to union office within the next 48 hours” the notice said.
The union warned that it would not be responsible if any legal action was taken against Pashtuns who failed to comply with the noticeA second traders union of Lahore has called for Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah and police officials to take action against non-Punjabi people selling dry fruits and sun glasses in the market.Earlier this week, a notice issued by Mandi Bahauddin police asked residents to remain vigilant and keep an eye on Pathans and non-Punjabis. – SAMAA
Re: Punjab police, traders accused of racial profiling
Apart from above all Hawkers and goods sellers at Main Market and other markets, are told to register with Local Trade Unions of traders regardless of their ethinic profile…
This is important step to ensure the security of the traders…with this step only hawkers registered with unions can do their business…
And yes there are people who are actively spreading ethinic hatred…if you want be sure that letter is authentic…call the numbers on the letter head…
Re: Punjab police, traders accused of racial profiling

Re: Punjab police, traders accused of racial profiling
This is half-truth, such instructions are issued by the local Trade Unions to register all the tenants and traders in almost all the markets of Lahore, be it a hawker or shop-keeper or owner, all have to be registered with the Unions and Unions are instructed to submit all the record with the Local Police Station, if unions fails to comply, then they’ll be held responsible for any mishap.
I am actually happy with this arrangement, if i have no monkey business going on and with the security situation in the country and in General, this should have been done decades ago… but never to late. In West or developed world one cannot even sell a can of pepsi without proper authorization and here in Pakistan, anyone can do whatever they want and where ever they want…
Re: Punjab police, traders accused of racial profiling
Chor ki darhi main tinka. Defender of JI’s acts should not come up with such claims. JI’s ideology has killed thousand times more than racism (not that racism should not be condemned).
Re: Punjab police, traders accused of racial profiling
Some market leader might have done this on thier own, still wrong. Govt has been following afgans for last few years. If it is pakistani Pashtun, he/she need not to worry. My relatives have couple of shop in hall road electronics market where good number of top traders are pushtun and urdu speaking no harm done to them nor any racial letter circulated by govt.
