Punjab, India

:salam:

I’ll be :insha:] off to Punjab, India in the last week of october later this year. Not sure exactly where in punjab right now but it’ll be either jalandhar or chandigarh. Just wanted some tips from the resident indians. Please let me know, what’s the weather like in late october? How about the people? Tourist attractions waghaira waghaira.

Thanks, much appreciated.

Re: Punjab, India

Best time to visit Chandigarh is October/November,.
As for places to visit try rock garden, sukhna lake, zakir hussain park and shanti kunj.

Try and visit Amritsar aswell.....if you can, I hear its beautiful with the golden temple and jallianwala baagh.

Re: Punjab, India

Chandigarh is the Capital of Punjab & Hariyana. Punchkula and Mohali cities have almost merged with Chandigarh.

The city was a planned and is divided in sectors, the main city is in sector 17. It looks a bit drab with too many concrete buildings, open roads & heaps of gardens. Sukhna Lake is were a lot of people go during the evenings especially in the Summers. The city is built on the foot of the shivalik ranges, and on a cold day you can snow on the mountain tops.

Shimla (the summer capital of British India) is just 250 kms from there, There are train services and regular bus service.

Halal food may be a problem-I have heard there is a Halal resturant in sector 35 market.

Re: Punjab, India

Thnaks for the tips guys, i will remember to visit these places if i can. Aash’ bud the golden temple & ajmer sharif i have wanted to see for a long long time, those r the 2 thing on my mind rite now.

Mala halah food is no problem daaalein sabjiyaan zindabad. So i can expect the mercury to rise then fella’s:sunny:

Re: Punjab, India

Punjabi, Hindi/urdu & English is spoken in these areas.

I am not sure if there is a Mosque in Chandigarh, but in Jalandhar you are bound to find some.

The population of Punjab would be roughly 45% sikhs, 40% Hindus and 15% Christians/Muslims. You will find the girls riding cycles & scooters on the streets. Rural Punjab has done well, and the people will look healthy & prosperous. Though the rural roads are still tracks.

Khalistan is a wound, and people may take offense to that-so avoid all discussions.

Re: Punjab, India

Oh yeah most definitely, that's one chapter not worth bringing up. I don't want a sardar giving me the 3rd degree. So weather wise, it'll be hot in late october?

Re: Punjab, India

luc, the weather should be moderate in late October. I guess the temperature would be below 20 degrees C. Of course, as compared to UK it will be warm

As for tourism, I have a few recommendations:

If you are into nature tourism, there is a hill station called “Kasauli”, near Chandigarh. I haven’t been there, but people say its very beautiful. It should be accessible by bus, and if you start from Chandigarh early in the morning, you should be able to return by night.

More information here:
http://www.chandigarhcity.com/tourism/outside.htm

Some other fun locations inside Chandigarh:

  • The Panjab University campus in sector 11 - just for absorbing the enthu. and the “coolness” of the local munde and kuriyan.
  • Kapil Dev’s hotel in sector 35 - it may not be a good hotel per se, but you may find some interesting quirk, tidbit or trivia there. And if nothing else, you can always tell your friends that you have been there, and what a waste of time it was. :bukbuk:

By the way, Diwali falls on 1st November this year, so if you are still around at that time, it will be an interesting experience watching the celebrations.

Re: Punjab, India

Chail, Solan, Kusuli are all small hill stations within 2 hours bus journey from Chadigarh-lovely scenery.

Delhi-is 4-5 hours by bus, and Patiala 1-2 hours.
