Punishment for slandering the Prophet is death in Islam

A sahih i.e authentic hadith from Sunan Abi Dawood reads as ;

Narrated Abdullah Ibn Abbas:

It appears to me from the authentic hadith that in Islam any individual is allowed to take matters into his own hands in killing a person who is slandering Holy Prophet p.b.u.h. Why i am hearing that only a court or ruler can carry out this punishment. Is this from Jurisprudence of later times?. How khulfa-i-Rashideen dealt with this matter? and what are the rulings of four imams of Ahle-i-sunnah on this?. If any one has sources on it, please share it.

The problem in imitating the action of the blind man today is that Hazrat Muhammad p.b.u.h was guided and informed by Allah through angel Jibraeel. So we are assured that the blind man indeed was truthful in saying that her slave-woman was slandering the Prophet p.b.u.h. The truth was acknowledged by the Prophet p.b.u.h and the crowd was told that there would be no retaliation or compensation for woman killed. But today, a man may murder his wife for whatever reason, lets say he hit her head with stone in anger and he may try to avoid qisaas by claiming that her wife was slandering Prophet p.b.u.h . I will give the example from real life. Four men from my home town were employed by a Chauhdry of Khushab (Punjab) as bodyguards. One day they murdered the Chauhdry and looted his money and few precious items. They arrived in their home town and spread the stories that they killed the Chauhdri for whom they were working, because he was blasphemous and used to hang the names of Allah and his Rasool in the necks of his dogs. The people not only believed them but congratulated them for doing the noble work. After some time Punjab police came after them and made a raid on the house of the one among them. The other three had already escaped to lawless region of Waziristan (where Police has no jurisdiction) while the one , who was sleeping in his home, was arrested. Millions of rupees in cash and precious items were recovered from his house.

**This story is indicative of the justice with which the Muslims dealt with the people of the Book, which was brought by sharee’ah as a mercy to the worlds. The rights of the Jews who had entered into a treaty with the Muslims were guaranteed and protected, and it was not permissible to transgress against them by annoying them or harming them in any way. Hence when the people found a Jewish woman who had been slain, they were upset and they referred the matter to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), who had given them that covenant and promise of safety, and had not taken the jizyah from them. He got angry and adjured the Muslims by Allaah that the one who had done this deed should show himself, so that he might determine his punishment and issue a ruling concerning him. But when he found out that she had broken the covenant time after time, by insulting the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and reviling him, all her rights were denied, and she deserved the punishment of execution which sharee’ah imposes on everyone who reviles the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), whether he is a Muslim, a dhimmi or a mu’aahid, because transgressing against the status of the Prophets is disbelief in Allaah Almighty, and it invalidates every sanctity, right and covenant; it is a major betrayal which deserves the most severe punishment.

Re: Punishment for slandering the Prophet is death in Islam

What is the level of authenticity of this narration?

Re: Punishment for slandering the Prophet is death in Islam

I wonder who was a bigger slanderer than Abdullah bin ubbay whose insulting phrase about the prophet is in Quran

63:8) They say, ‘If we return to Medina, the one most honourable will surely drive out therefrom the one most mean;’ while *true *honour belongs to Allah and to His Messenger and the believers; but the hypocrites know not.

but we all know the kind of treatment meted to him by the holy prophet (pbuh).

this topic is another example where we very conveniently overlook Quran and look elsewhere.

As for blasphemy, the Quran rejects any worldly punishment against those who mock the signs of Allah, their account will be in the hereafter: [4:141] “And He has already revealed to you in the Book that, when you hear the Signs of Allah being denied and mocked at, sit not with them until they engage in a talk other than that; for in that case you would be like them. Surely, Allah will assemble the hypocrites and the disbelievers in Hell, all together;”(4:141), “And bear patiently all that they say; and part with them in a decent manner.” (73:11)

what say you?

**As for the report about the slaying of ‘Asma bint Marwaan, it was narrated by al-Qadaa‘i in **Musnad ash-Shihaab (856), al-Khateeb in *at-Tareekh(13/99), Ibn ‘Asaakir in his *Tareekh (51/244), and Ibn ‘Umar al-Harbi in his *Fawaa’id (50), all via Muhammad ibn al-Hajjaaj al-Lakhami Abu Ibraaheem al-Waasiti from Mujaalid ibn Sa‘eed from ash-Sha‘bi from Ibn ‘Abbaas

This is an invalid isnaad and a fabricated report that was narrated by Muhammad ibn al-Hajjaaj of whom al-Bukhaari said: His hadeeth is to be rejected. Ibn Ma‘een said: (He is) an evil liar. Ad-Daaraqutni said: (He is) a liar; and on one occasion he said: He is not trustworthy.

Mizaan al-I‘tidaal, 3/509**
**
**Ibn ‘Adiyy said: Muhammad ibn al-Hajjaaj fabricated the hadeeth about the woman who used to lampoon the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), according to which when she was killed he (allegedly) said: “The validity of what you have done is something that no one could dispute.”

Re: Punishment for slandering the Prophet is death in Islam

Finding hard to believe it’s Islamic

Goes against the compassion of the last Prophet

He was patient even when he was slandered during his life

Take the case of the lady who use to throw rubbish at him

One cannot simply take the matter in his own hand if found someone slandering the Prophet

There are few rules which need to be follow before any punishment is given , if any

One being the person has to be sane

Where as in Pakistan , it’s usually use to settle personal score by accusing someone of slandering

Could be anything from family feud, to different sect

Getting very common

Re: Punishment for slandering the Prophet is death in Islam

You have answered this question yourself below. Apparently its not allowed to ‘‘guess’’ the ruling of a matter in Islam even if the person guesses correctly! A persons judgement must be grounded in knowledge of the Quran and Sunnah of the Messenger SallAllaahu alaihi wa alihi wa Sallam in order to do ijtihad (make a ruling).
Although the companions (may Allaah be pleased with him) were able to do this, we in our times are not. Hence the importance of knowledgeable ulema/courts especially when the judgement of individuals is not reliable

Re: Punishment for slandering the Prophet is death in Islam

Peace @kchughtai,

Provide me source/reference of 4:141? as you quoted above. Is it from Chapter-4 “An-Nisa’a” verse 141 or "Chapter-63 “Munafiqun”?

Re: Punishment for slandering the Prophet is death in Islam

@lethal kamikaze](http://gupshup.org/gs/members/lethal-kamikaze/)

it is 4:140. (4:141 including bismillah) i.e., Surah An-Nisa verse 140

an-Nisa` 4:140

Re: Punishment for slandering the Prophet is death in Islam

Peace kchughtai,

These verse are about “Munafiqoon” and not related to this topic.

Re: Punishment for slandering the Prophet is death in Islam

This verse and some other verses only depict how to react when facing blasphemous talk. can you present verses that corroborate the stance you are supporting.

Re: Punishment for slandering the Prophet is death in Islam

peace @LKK

thanks for the video but what is your point. Are you implying that “*Signs of Allah being denied and mocked at” *have different meaning and beget different treatment if these acts were done by hypocrites. I want to hear your thoughts. btw, notice the beginning of the verse 4:140, “and He has already revealed to you in the Book”. this refers to an earlier revealed verse with similar content i.e.,

6:68) When thou seest men engaged in vain discourse about Our signs, turn away from them unless they turn to a different theme. If Satan ever makes thee forget, then after recollection, sit not thou in the company of those who do wrong. **now what say you?
