punishment for apostasy in Islam

what is the punishment for apostasy in Islam? is the same in both sects (Shi’a and Sunni) and in all the madhahib? is there a difference between apostasy by born-Muslims and by those who’ve converted to Islam and then leave?

Re: punishment for apostasy in Islam

Whatever it is, I don't think it's a leniant punishment. I think apostasy by born Muslims or converts is the same. My question is whether or not someone is allowed to re-convert after comitting apostasy, in Islam.

Re: punishment for apostasy in Islam

Narrated Anas bin Malik: A group of people from 'Ukl (or 'Uraina) tribe ----but I think he said that they were from ‘Ukl came to Medina and (they became ill, so) the Prophet ordered them to go to the herd of (Milch) she-camels and told them to go out and drink the camels’ urine and milk (as a medicine). So they went and drank it, and when they became healthy, they killed the shepherd and drove away the camels. This news reached the Prophet early in the morning, so he sent (some) men in their pursuit and they were captured and brought to the Prophet before midday. He ordered to cut off their hands and legs and their eyes to be branded with heated iron pieces and they were thrown at Al-Harra, and when they asked for water to drink, they were not given water. (Abu Qilaba said, “Those were the people who committed theft and murder and reverted to disbelief after being believers (Muslims), and fought against Allah and His Apostle”). (Book #82](82. Punishment of Disbelievers at War with Allah and His Apostle - Sahih Al-Bukhari - 0 - 797), Hadith #797](82. Punishment of Disbelievers at War with Allah and His Apostle - Sahih Al-Bukhari - 0 - 797)) bukhari

that's very humane.

Re: punishment for apostasy in Islam

That's some pretty radical torture to ascribe to the prophet. The guy who 'reported' it wasn't even born during the time of Muhammed. Do people really use these narrations as tenets of faith?

Re: punishment for apostasy in Islam

Is the punishment for apostasy in any way connected to circumcision? i.e. since circumcision establishes a person's slavery to Allah it provides the justification for inflicting the death penalty? also because during the 3-day repentance period the apostate is encouraged to focus on his circumcision and how it establishes an irrevocable bond?
