"Public schools" in Pakistan?

What are the top public schools in Pakistan? I mean in the classic British sense of the term-with great academics and fancy extra-curricular stuff like riding, polo etc. I know of a few, can any one expand the list:

Aitchison College

Sadiq Public School

Army Burn Hall College

Lawrence College

Abbottabad Public School

Habib Public School

Cadet College Hasan Abdal *

  • are the other CC equally good, or equally well equpit?

Chand Bagh School

I want to get my MA and then try and teach at one of these for a little while. (A year or two)

Do some of the other famous schools, KGS, LGS St Patricks etc offer the same breath of opportunity as the above schools?

I want to do something for my motherland, and teaching and securing the futures of the next generation I feel is the most noble of ways to help Pakistan. I just want to make sure its at a place worth my while.

Can mods sticky this thread, creating like a directory of good Pakistani schools.

Re: "Public schools" in Pakistan?

In terms of A level or senior schools which are quality but dont have attatched junior schools, what are the good ones:

Avicenna School, Karachi seems pretty cool.

Lyceum Karachi (met a kid from there, he was at an Oxford interview) :)

Re: "Public schools" in Pakistan?

Perhaps.....the KARACHI GRAMMAR SCHOOL (absolutely no connection with LGS) could have a slot for you at it's Junior Campus at Boating Basin-Clifton.

Re: "Public schools" in Pakistan?

I have heard of KGS but:

(a) is it a comprehensive UK style public school with the trimmings?

and

(b) there website never works. Not that in itself means anything, but it leaves a poor impression. If they cannot be bothered to operate a proper site, there portal to the world, one has to question there standing.

And I would not want to teach at a junior school unless it was part/parcel of a larger 5-18 prep school.

Re: "Public schools" in Pakistan?

pitaro is another one.

Re: "Public schools" in Pakistan?

(a) YES

(b) as I understand--they are re-doing the whole thing afresh. Junio School has KG to Class VI...and the adjacent Senior Wing has VII to "O" levels...while the OLD BELL's home of 150+years back at Saddar has "A" levels. I am sure any of these three can best work out for you. Send your CV to their Heads...

Re: "Public schools" in Pakistan?

^ not good anymore.

p.s: i meant Pitaro

Re: "Public schools" in Pakistan?

Happy Home school , used to very good in our time , no recent update !

Re: "Public schools" in Pakistan?

Happy Home was good during the late 80's, early 90's.

Re: "Public schools" in Pakistan?

Re: "Public schools" in Pakistan?

yes, at one time, it was considered one of the good schools among a host of schools for aspiring cadets but I don't think it has lived up to its reputation. ( btw, Asif Zardari also went to Pitaro)

Re: "Public schools" in Pakistan?

ya, i know. he was a few years senior to ppl i know who went there.

Re: "Public schools" in Pakistan?

Re: "Public schools" in Pakistan?

^^

Money isnt the motivating factor behind such a job, but it is a factor as I have certain financial committments and repayments to make.

Re: "Public schools" in Pakistan?

The true british sense of the word public school..

I would say only Aitchison really qualifies.. You'll find all the wadiara's kids there.. a couple of bright cookies here n there... but its got all the bells n whistles you,d expect in a public school.

Being from Cadet College Hasan Abdal, I would tell you if you are talking about a great academic institute with the cream of the crop.... CCH is it. Yes, it might get a couple of "pawa's" here n there where you'd get the CM's kid, or some generals kid studying there (with weak academics)... but majority of the kids would be way smarter compared to other schools you mantioned. The main focus is on academics... and theres a vast range of extra curricular activities and a tough daily routine... excellent sports facilities, a proper riding club and an annual equestrian show as well, performed by cadets... but no polo.. atleast it wasnt there when i was there.

You'll find clubs ranging from hiking and mountaineering to aeromodelling and caligraphy and drama and arts..

You'll have various inter wing (inter house)competitions throughout the year with very very serious and focussed participation (because being a part of a champion wing at the annual parents day parade is a big deal for every cadet).

apart from extra curricular activities, theres a strict military type lifestyle, physical traning in the morning, marching(army style parade)... uniforms for different events.... strict discipline and punctuality,, personal grooming...

We had guys from aitchison come to CCH, and we always thought they were a bunch of softies and spoilt brats of hotshots... which is probably a bit unfair, but will apply to a lot of them still.

So really, its upto you what your priorities are... If you want a healthy mix of everything along with some strict discipline and excellent academics.... CCH would be a good choice... it isnt elite exclusive... but definitely one of the top institutes when you look at the overall mix.

Annual exam results will often show you top positions going to these kids...

used to boil my blood when you'd hear conspiracy theories that the whole centres are 'sold' where these cadets take their board exams... sorry but I,ve sat in Matric and Fsc exams there... never had the luxury of cheating i'm afraid... it used to infact boil our blood when we'd hear stories of how exam centres are a cheating galore outside... You want a smart bunch of allrounders in your class.. go to CCH. a nice mix of public school + army style living with bright kids.
Exceptions are everywhere, so not everyones of the highest standard.

There's O and A levels and the normal Matric/fsc style syllabus. The others you spoke about, the lawrence college, burnhall, sadiq and co, dont even come close... call them 'boarding schools' thats about it...

Re: "Public schools" in Pakistan?

Yaar Polo was just an example. All I've read of CCHA makes it seem a great place to teach. It seems to have excellent extras.

I think the 8 I mentioned are the most "public school" of the Public Schools in Pakistan. Can someone provide more details about the Karachi HW's- KGS et al.
