For those people who witnessed zia ul haq’s rule and the eighties, please share your experiences of watching PTV (the only channel) at that time. What differences do you see between then and now, what do you miss about that time and what do you believe was instrumental in creating some of the best dramas and talk shows in television history.

Subah Ki Nashriyaat (Morning transmission)
Mustansa Hussain Tarar aka chacha ji used to host it along with Annie. They used to have different segments included drama, cartoons, cooking etc. The famous painter Mansur Rahi used to come on the weekends(if I rememebr correctly). It was telecast live.
Fifty Fifty
Loosely based on Saturday Night, Fifty Fifty remains a legendary comedy skit-show.It was directed by Shoaib Mansoor and written by Anwar Maqsood. Ismail tara, Zeba Shehnaz, majid Jahangir were some of the regulars on the show.
Airwolf
An American series that ran from 1984-1987. The series gained a massive following and still remains the most popular American TV show ever broadcast in Pakistan along with Knight Rider.
******Anita Ayub
**Anita Ayub was a strange character in mid eighties. She called herself the Brooke Shields of Pakistan. She also said that she will go andcompete in the Miss Universe pageant and represent Pakistan.According to some rumors, the judges threw her out of the competition after the swimsuit round.
She was a terrible actress, and appeared like the Pakistani version of a dumb blonde in the PTV plays.
Sunehray Din (1989)
It was a short play based on 6 episodes and used to run for half an hour on Sundays. It was made by Shoaib Mansoor who later followed it up with Alpha Bravo Charlie.
It stared Salim Sheikh.

^ I have watched sakeena aur cindrella..very nice play .
Written by Noor-ul-Huda Shah and directed by Saira Kazmi, this serial bemoaned the many young lives that were lost and families broken during Zia’s 11-year-dictatorship. Jamal Shah’s angry-young-man role turned him into a star while Tapish went on to influence a series of similar plays between 1989 and 1991.
*Drama 81-85 *
Director: Mohammad Nisar Hussain
Writers: Anwar Maqsood, Ashfaq Ahmed, Aapa Bano Qudsia and others.
I remember a few plays from this series, like Mama Seemi, Na Qafs Na Aashyana which were quite mesmerizing.
Music 89

![]()
Directed by Shoaib Mansoor *, *Music 89 was hosted by Nazia and Zoheb Hassan. This show is responsible for single-handedly creating legends out of bands like Vital Signs, Junoon, Ali haider, Sajjad Ali, Jupiters and underground rock bands like Final Cut and The Barbarians.
Nazia and Zoheb Hassan
In 1980, a 15 year old Nazia Hassan, residing in the UK sang Aap Jaisa Koi for the film indian flick Qurbani. She was selected for the nasal quality of her voice. The song became an instant hit in the UK and the indo-pak sub-continent. Nazia along with her brother Zoheb Hassan produced successive hit songs*. Disco Deewane* and Tere Qadmon Ko became such a rage that their very first album was declared the best selling album of the time in Asia.
When Zia came into power, almost all music videos were banned to air on PTV. The two Hassan siblings were banned from dancing together on stage and the videos would feature Nazia waist-up to hide her dancing feet.
While music videos were banned in the country, Nazia and Zohaib, teamed up to produce more albums. They managed to reach UK Top 40 with the English version of their song ‘Disco Deewane’ titled ‘Dreamer Deewane’. The album sold over 14 million records, not only in Asia, but as far as South America, South Africa, and Russia.
