PTI activists search trucks for Nato supplies

How is PTI diff from Taliban? Isn’t this what Taliban are doing, too? Taking laws into their own hands?

PESHAWAR: Club-wielding activists from Imran Khan’s political party forcibly searched trucks for Nato supplies in northwest Pakistan on Sunday in protest at deadly US drone strikes.

Around 100 workers from the former cricket star’s Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf (PTI) party set up checkpoints in the northwestern city of Peshawar on a main road leading to Afghanistan.

They stopped trucks and hauled drivers from their cabs to check their paperwork, following a call by Khan at a rally on Saturday to block supplies to Nato forces in Afghanistan in protest at the drone attacks.

The activists, carrying the PTI’s green and red flag, broke open truck containers to check their contents, an AFP reporter at the scene said.

The PTI heads the government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, of which Peshawar is the capital. But authority for the highways lies with the federal government, which has so far made no move to block Nato supplies.

Muhammad Faisal, a senior police official, said the PTI activists’ actions were illegal but he was powerless to act.

“The protesters are doing unlawful acts by checking documents and screening goods, they don’t have authority,” he told AFP.

“But we can’t take action against them because we have no instructions from the government. If the government orders us, we will stop this illegal activity.”

PTI activist Asghar Khalil told AFP they were heeding their leader’s call to action and would not stop until Washington promised to end drone strikes.

Khan has long opposed the US campaign of drone attacks targeting Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants in Pakistan’s tribal areas.

He has intensified his rhetoric since a US drone strike killed Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud on November 1.

Khan says that attack was a deliberate attempt by Washington to sabotage efforts towards peace talks with the militants, who have killed thousands in a six-year campaign of violence.

“They are doing unlawful acts. They broke the sealing of my container and forcibly examined the goods,” Faiz Muhammad Khan, a truck driver transporting sanitary items to Afghanistan, told AFP.

“If they want to block supplies for Nato forces, they should stop it in Karachi or at the border.”

Later in the day, one of Khan’s allies, the right wing Jamaat-i-Islami party, led thousands in a protest against drone attacks and the Nato supply line in the southern port city of Karachi, where the shipments originate.

Pakistan is a key transit route for the US-led mission in landlocked Afghanistan, particularly as Nato forces prepare to withdraw by the end of next year.

Nato supplies were suspended on Saturday because of a major PTI rally, which was held on the route used by the trucks.

The drone strikes are deeply unpopular in Pakistan. Islamabad publicly condemns them as counter-productive and a violation of sovereignty, although previous governments have given their tacit support to them.

The US regards the strikes as a highly effective tool in the fight against militancy.

Re: PTI activists search trucks for Nato supplies

Imran is just flocking a herd with mob mentality :)

I saw many proudly claiming on tv channels that they are stopping the trucks , checking their papers and asking them to leave .... Checking their papers ? who gives them the authority to do so ?

Re: PTI activists search trucks for Nato supplies

It would have been better if the kpk government had blocked the supplies instead of doing it like this.

Re: PTI activists search trucks for Nato supplies

We’ve come a long way in our decade long partnership. We’ve lost thousands of brave soldiers in fighting terrorism. Our common sacrifices clarify our stance against terrorism. The truth is that we’ve also faced several obstacles and challenges in our decade long partnership. But at the end of the day, our common peace objectives have allowed us to overcome any obstacles and issues associated with our common mission. We’ve seen the negatives of staying on the opposite sides of the fence, and at the same time, we realize the benefits of working side by side. Our officials continue to meet to address our shared concerns. And we certainly hope to continue our partnership for the sake of restoring peace and stability in the region.

Re: PTI activists search trucks for Nato supplies

These common objectives have destroyed Pakistan Mr Centcom. Pakistan is paying the price for siding with your country since 79, how many more lives do you need to be fully satisfied? How much worse could it have been if both countries were on opposite sides of the fence? We can do a quick comparison between foe Iran and ally Pakistan. We can also see the situation of allies Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt and Libya etc.

Mr Centcom time has come for US to do more and show it cares for Pakistan. How come it can see terrorists within Pakistan, but on the other hand let those people have a field day (in Afghanistan) who are creating troubles within Pakistan (Fazlullah and company)?

Re: PTI activists search trucks for Nato supplies

I think some 60 odd cases against PTI activists have been registered for harassing drivers.

Non one is above the law and PTI activists are no exception.

Re: PTI activists search trucks for Nato supplies

Looks like you have lost touch with reality in hatred for PTI :hehe:

Re: PTI activists search trucks for Nato supplies

^^^ Not really. I was merely pointing out that there is no diff between warlords setting up their private checkpoints from what PTI people are doing. What authority do PTI workers have in stopping or roughing up truckers who are engaged in legal commerce within borders of the country?

Btw, PTI is a protest party who plays negative politics, like JI. As long as there is something to protest about and IK gets TV time they will stay relevant.

Re: PTI activists search trucks for Nato supplies

Sorry to bust your bubble and thrash your propoganda machine, PTI is a ruling party now. whether they protest or not, they'll srtay relevant for next four or so years. In the meantime, maybe some people need to find a new hobby.

Re: PTI activists search trucks for Nato supplies

On topic, IK and PTI activist every now and then lose plot on their drone protest. Good thing that FIR has been filed and I hope to see legal action being taken against them.

As far as (peaceful) protests are concerned, they're part of democracy. Anyone who has probelm with them can go live in Saudi Arabia. Simples.

If PTI can shut down all traffic to Afghanistan there may be something real good come out of this. The biggest source of corruption and smuggling in Pakistan, Afghan transit trade will shut down.

Re: PTI activists search trucks for Nato supplies

Taliban do stop the trucks to "loot" them, or extortion.... PTI workers, definitely did wrong, but wanted to stop them going into Afghanistan.

This has to be done via govt orders, not party orders.

Re: PTI activists search trucks for Nato supplies

I think problem is that NATO trucks cannot be stopped in KPK without checking a truck's papers. But it is illegal to do that.
In other words, Imran as usual did not think through how he could achieve his objective.

Re: PTI activists search trucks for Nato supplies

My understanding is that it is Pakistan government's obligation to provide security to Afghan transit trade.
Doing something like this will only sour relations with Afghanistan.

That is just an excuse to keep the gravy train running

Re: PTI activists search trucks for Nato supplies

Now he could tell us about the drone attacks and killing the innocent Pukhtuns, there is no doubt that his party chief has already consented to the drone attacks regardless who gets killed in the process. Perhaps his boss could allow these attacks in Southern Punjab where some of these nasty Taliban are also killing the innocent all over Pakistan.
