On June 3rd PTCL has launched first nationwide EV-DO Wireless Broadband service. i think after Wimax, GPRS EDGE & World Call’s EVDO (CDMA) the PTCL’s EV-DO gives 3G experience on the go. Monthly price is just 2K per month for 3MB & unlimited download.
For that speed it seems expensive. 8 grands for activation and 2 grands each month. I'll pass. But hopefully the prices will go down in coming years as this technology expands.
quite funny that when they cant get their normal dsl, broadband services running fine...they are aiming for bigger things instead.
Actually, it's quite a strategic move to excel in wireless infrastructure. Many other countries are doing the same because they lack the wireline infrastructure for cable or dsl based broadband.
With wireless, there are fewer physical disruptions (digging, laying cables, constructing cable towers, mounting wires etc.). So it's faster, cheaper and much more viable for developing countries to invest in wireless infrastructure. Brazil, China, and Pakistan are currently leading the wireless broadband implementation technologies like WiMax and that's a good thing!

Lets put it this way, moderanization of infrastructure is always good for consumers. The basic problem with 3rd world is they lack the wireline, thus wireless seems to be the solution. Anyway its convenient and easy to setup and its every where.
Just imagine the possibilities it brings not only for consumers but for corporate/small business/ security services (Police, Army) ..
Imagine equipping every Traffic police person with a wrist watch style computer where he can scan the or enter the ID no and check on the premises is this fake or real...
Given the current security situation in Pakistan, this is great thing PTCL is doing. I was reading somewhere that GHQ/NADRA is thinking about using this Ev-Do for security purposes too !

i think its a bargain, people were paying 11K or 9k to telecos for GPRS/EDGE connectivity, with PTCL its 6k for a USB & 4K for PCMCIA card and you can roam around the country with highspeed internet.
The speed is quite great too. Though its just the starting of the service and we expect good speed initially. Hopefully it will continue. I am using both worldcall evdo and ptcl evdo, and ptcl speed is far better but off course it comes with a price too :)
