prozac

Hi everyone!
One of my cousin is prescribed prozac by the doctor, 20mg 1OD. Can anyone please tell me how long does she need to continue?
Thank you!

Re: prozac

Ummmmm, why can’t she ask her Dr? and why can’t she ask herself? :konfused:

Re: prozac

She ain't on any such forum, she asked me because I recently finished my medical school but I haven't worked in psychiatry yet. (Rotation I mean)
Doctor has said take for 2 weeks and then asked her for fu but her parents are not comfortable taking her to psychiatrist for the fact 'log kya kahen gy ,baat phail jaye gi'.
^Any thing left on interrogation part?

Re: prozac

Why on earth would you ask people on an online forum for prescription med-related information, people who have no idea what your cousin's medical condition is?

That's just foolish!!! Who does that?

Re: prozac

Yeah it's foolish but when people have no way out ,they try seeking help online. Who knows there is a psychiatrist here ? Willing to help so more details could be shared?

Re: prozac

The reason the doctor's asked her for a 2 week follow up, which btw she MUST go to, is that anti-depressants unlike painkillers and antibiotics take a bit of time to have any sort of effect, and at minimum it is a 2 week period. After that follow up and another assessment the doctor will decide if her medicine needs to be changed or she needs to have her dosage adjusted, and how long she might have to continue.

Re: prozac

A psychiatrist here wouldn't be able to tell your cousin when to stop taking prozac unless they were treating her. It's a malpractice lawsuit waiting to happen. Better for your cousin or you is to ask her doctor the question since the doctor knows her medical history.

And if you're a med school graduate, why wouldn't you ask your professors or the doctors in the hospital you've done your rotations at, rather than on a random forum? Gosh, if this is how you're going to be practicing medicine (asking people on a Pakistani social networking forum) going forward, Allah hi hafiz hai.

Re: prozac

I think she can stop taking it when she's stable on it for awhile and feels better and then gradually wean off of it. But first the doctor will have to check that after the first three weeks if it is actually working for her. Its like a trial and error because sometimes the side effects don't let the med work very well on the patient.

Re: prozac

I didn't study in Pakistan and haven't started the hospital yet.
Your advice is noted.

Allah hafiz
:-P

Re: prozac

Thank you.
Yeah, I knew that 2 months period, I'll try convincing her family on my part.

Re: prozac

Thank you so much, much appreciated.

Re: prozac

sometimes ago, Prozac was cited as one of the factor in causing/developing tendency in patients to commit suicide or in exhibiting/engaging in violent behaviors. best thing for your cousin is to talk to her doctor. only he/she can tell her the right answers.
