Desire is the cause of all suffering … But this statement is not saying that desire is not the cause of happiness either … What needs to be understood from this is that we should have little expectation … But we should try to achieve our fullest potential … Imam Al-Ghazali took this concept further by identifying that when wisdom takes control of desire then it can be used for good. Motivation is not necessarily linked to desire … Or perhaps what is meant here is that principled motivation does not come from selfish desire …
