Desire is the cause of all suffering.
Hit the nail on the head there I reckon.
What do you guys think? Are these words of wisdom applicable to our everyday lives?

Re: Provoking thought from Buddhism
A desireless person isn't motivated, no?
For example, I desire to get promoted therefore I am motivated to work harder.
Re: Provoking thought from Buddhism
^ hard work is the suffering that quote is talking about :P
Re: Provoking thought from Buddhism
Of course
Re: Provoking thought from Buddhism
the annoying thing is, one can control one's own desire but one cannot control another's desire. therefore one ends up suffering for a foreign desire, so may as well suffer for one's own desire. okay i have confused myself with all these ones.
Re: Provoking thought from Buddhism
you become stone without desire don't u?

You either understood this wrong or the place from where you copied this from hasn't translated it properly. The real meaning is "extreme desire or greed is the cause of all suffering".

Peace honeybeez
Zen writings are typical in the way Cough Cough wrote the post ...
Desire is the cause of all suffering ... But this statement is not saying that desire is not the cause of happiness either ... What needs to be understood from this is that we should have little expectation ... But we should try to achieve our fullest potential ... Imam Al-Ghazali took this concept further by identifying that when wisdom takes control of desire then it can be used for good. Motivation is not necessarily linked to desire ... Or perhaps what is meant here is that principled motivation does not come from selfish desire ...
