Provincial harmony reaches another peak:

No wheat, no gas, warns Bugti

Staff Report

MULTAN: The Punjab has until April 30 to lift the ban on inter-district wheat transport or Balochistan will stop supplying it with natural gas, said Nawab Akbar Bugti, chief of the Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP) to Daily Times over the telephone on Wednesday.

Fazl-e-Rabbani, the NWFP food minister, earlier warned the Punjab government it would lose its electricity supply from the Frontier if the ban were not lifted.

The two accused the Punjab government of trying to “cripple” flour mills in Balochistan and the NWFP by creating an artificial wheat shortage so its own industries could flourish.

They also threatened to cut off Punjab businessmen’s land routes to Afghanistan, Iran and Central Asia if the ban were not lifted. They said unless the wheat crisis were resolved, the national issue would become an international one.

Both the NWFP and Balochistan governments have asked the federal government to allow them to import wheat from Central Asia, India and other countries if the Punjab government does not lift the ban by April 30.

NWFP threat to cut Punjab electricity justified: ANP

PESHAWAR Begum Naseem Wali Khan, provincial president of the Awami National Party (ANP), has supported the NWFP government’s warning that it would disconnect the electricity supply to the Punjab if it did not lift its ban on the movement of wheat.

“If Punjab considers it has rights over wheat, then it should recognise NWFP’s right over electricity and Balochistan’s right over natural gas,” Ms Khan told party workers on Wednesday. She said that Punjab would not dare ban the wheat supply to other provinces in the future if electricity supply to it were disconnected.

Ms Khan said that the current crisis could not be resolved until the provinces were given complete autonomy and control over their resources. “If one wants to strengthen the federation, then the federating units should be strengthened. There is no other way,” she said, adding the Punjab government’s ban on the wheat supply was a clear violation of the constitution and warned that the flourmills in the NWFP would shut down if the wheat supply remained interrupted. Ms Khan said that Punjab had refused to lift the ban on wheat movement despite directions from the federal government.

“The Punjab’s decision will create disharmony among the provinces, which will prove a severe blow to the country’s solidarity,” she said. staff report.
